Default 69xx what is the magic?

It seems that most (all?) posts regarding pirate reception show a frequency
of 69XX. Is this a coincidence, or is it due to other factors, i.e.,
propagation, time of day, etc.?

Once upon a time you could bend a coil and get a 40 meter ham
transmitter to load up just below the 40 meter band.

One other thing is that it is a relatively unused part of the
frequency spectrum. Other than a couple of AM stations on 6890 and
6915kHz and an occasional utility broadcast on 6955kHZ the span is
almost unused. Although I am hearing more fisihng boat and other
pirates using these frequencies as well (usually LSB - little or no
music - just voice communication)

In Europe the pirate band seems to be from 5800-6400kHz and operating
hours early in the morning - 0700-1100UTC. Central frequency around
6300kHz. Not sure why that is - maybe its pirate tradition handed down
from Marconi or something.

PS. Right now a pirate is on 6930AM - playing blues @2200UTC and just
heard "thinking man radio" at 6925.07 USB playing rock @2217UTC.

Hallicrafters: I did see your reply to my post. Thank you for the info. I
will be cruising that band.
