Default An actual radio post - Icom R75 tech problem

Hi - if anyone has any experience with an R75, I would appreciate any
ideas you have. The R75 has several filter settings, narrow-normal-
wide. Until Monday night, they all worked perfectly. Suddenly, on
the AM-wide setting, the signal is enormously attenuated - not
inaudible, but virtually all the gain is gone in that setting. In all
other settings the radio works as it should.

Any ideas? Is this a filter problem, a solder problem, other? The
radio has not received any knocks or spikes I know of. It does have
the Kiwa mods, which means the fault occurs in the 6 kHz filter that
replaces the original 15 kHz filter.

Thanks,
Bruce

If you put a jumper across the filter does the gain come back ?

Another possibility:

If the filters are easily switchable from position to position, try
swapping a couple and see if the fault follows the filter or remains
with the circuitry for that selectivity position.

There are a bunch of updates. You need to send the radio to Washington.
They will make it better than new for about $150-$200. There are bad
capacitors inside sealed sub-assemblies; the whole radio gets taken apart.

ICOM America is a small company with nice people. You can get the lead
service tech on the phone no problem. They have a flat rate for the R75
upgrade as I recall.

How to Contact Technical Support

Monday – Friday 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Phone: (800) 253-1498 or (425) 450-6087

Thanks - I would love to do this - but the thing has Kiwa mods that I
really like, and I don't want IcomAmerica to restore it back to any
"original condition". However, I will try a phone call to see what
they can do for me.

Thanks, Guys - these are fine ideas. I checked inside last night; the
filter in question is hard-soldered into the CB; if it were just
inserted, I guess I could have just plopped another similar filter I
have (15 kHz) into place to try it out.

I've also already spoken with Kiwa, and this morning I'll give Icom a
call.

I've had some interaction with ICOM in Bellevue. They do nice
work, and they're pretty quick, depending on workload. The first
time, there was a miscommunication, apparently, and they didn't to
the second part of the project I sent them. So you need to be very
clear about your symptoms and your expectations.

In my case, they did make it right, however. And the second radio
I sent to them, came back to me looking and operating like new.

I have no hesitation about sending a rig to them now, or in the
future.
