Been there, done that, used galena crystals, razor blades, corroded
metals, etc. as detectors as a young boy. Wound the coils on old
oatmeal tubes and made coaxial caps out of copper pipe sections with
"tromboned" sections and were insulated by a sheet of thin plastic
wrapped around the inner pipe, or just waxed paper if that was all which
was available. Or, a variable cap stolen from some old military surplus
equipment ...

Then tube regens, transistor and finally ICs ...

Electronics, SW listening, and do-it-yourself projects were a great
hobby into my teens ... mostly forgotten when the first girl friend came
along ... later, degrees and employment in the field ...

Aquariums and SW radios, computer equip, etc. still fills the hobby
rooms here and spills over into the living room and bedroom ...

Regards,
JS
