Well yes, I DO contend it works pretty well. (Please note I did not say it was perfect.) * It saved the day for lots of blue-haired little old ladies that never got married and made peanuts while employed as retail clerks. * It saved an acquaintance of mine when his father died at a young age. Social Security kept the wolf away from the door and kept his mother from having to send him to an orphanage. * Heck, even a member of this newsgroup (who shall remain nameless) gets a Social Security disability check. "Debasement of the currency" is occurring with -or without- Social Security. And finally, call it "forced" if you will, but many people made such lousy wages that they were lucky to put food on the table and pay the mortgage without having any money left over to set aside for their retirement. |
