Exclamation DX-440, no reception of AM or SW signals.

I got out my old but little used DX-440 and can get nothing but FM stations. Does anyone have any suggestion(s) as to what the problem/fix might be.? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

If the FM part works, you have probably blown the "front end". This is a known problem with the '440. Fortunately, it's a part that Radio Shack still sells. The only real pain about the repair is disassembly and re-assembly of the radio.

There's probably a Yahoo group for this radio (I've never looked) where you can get all sorts of info and improvements.

Is this an AM, FM, SW radio? Could try repeatedly changing the band switch
back and forth between detents. Contacts could be corroded or high
resistance. If you get to opening it up, you could try contact cleaner.

Another thought. Are there separate antenna inputs? Rod antenna for FM?

In the DX440 / ATS803A I believe there is a Field Effect Transistor
that can be damaged by static electricity. From what I recall it is
labled Q1 and you replace it with an MPF102.

First check the internal connection to the antenna and make sure it is
not broken.
