AOR 7030+
After decades of service...and excellent performance, at that...it looks like the tuning encoder on my 7030+ has snuffed it. AOR no longer services the radio. AOR UK is out of business. And Bourns, which made the encoder, discontinued it some time ago. So, $1800 paperweight? Or anyone have any assistance? p |

Or anyone have any assistance? p I don't know what the output is (I assume two pulses 90degrees apart, the leading one indicating direction), but it can't be too hard to duplicate. Maybe it means a different tuning rate as the knob turns. People did make them in the early days of synthesizers, so that's also an option. The worst scenario would be having to mount a new encoder outboard because nothing fits physically. YOu can duplicate it with an oscillator and two buttons, one for up and one for down, though I know that's not nearly as good as a knob. Stepping motors have the proper output when used in reverse, turn the shaft and you get the right signal, but I'm not sure you can get them with enough steps per turn to be a satisfying replacement. It is about 40 to 50 USD. |

I'll track that down. Thanks to all for the advice. It was suggested, privately, that I may be able to repair the old one. And, not being afraid to get my fingers dirty, you've given me several options, that should be a fun project to bring it back. See, we get away from politics, and we all come together. First one to sing Kum-bah-yah, gets it. Hopefully you'll get it fixed. This group has been getting away from shortwave for a bit now! |

One of the suggestions was to contact a guy in the UK who was an AOR engineer. He has parts. I did. And, he does. Thanks for all the help. Oh...and while the AOR is down, I've had to revert to my Drake. It sucks to have to slum it like that. p |

This group has been getting away from shortwave for a bit now! That's been the case for a number of years, now, Steve. I did read on the BBC website, though, that they've mounted an expansion of the World Service that's the biggest since the 70's. Amazing how they've finally discovered something we all said nearly 15 years, ago, now: They'd find that Radio has reach the internet does not. And that they'd regret the contraction. Takes 'em a while, at Radio House, apparently, but it seems they've finally begun to see what we've all seen since the 40's. p |
