I'm not trying to be off-topic, and this may get "the dumb question of the year award". I thought fidonet (in which I used to a regular user) bit the dust a number of years ago, and is defunct. If not, how can I access it? Fred Burgess I'm not sure what state it's in, it certainly has suffered in recent years, but various BBS's do still exist. At least some of them are now online, so you can telnet into them. One here in Montreal is juxtaposition.dynip.com Telnet to it, and go through the registration process, just like if you actually dialled in, and you'll get access to Fidonet. From there, you can likely find a local BBS. The website for Fidonet is http://www.fidonet.org Michael |

(Maximo Lachman) wrote Okay. But it's not a text-only, swl-only group. There is such a group on both fidonet and freenet, and there is no off topic flooding in either place, but that's because there's no traffic. Freenet doesn't share its posts w/other freenets, whereas fidonet does share its posts w/other fidonets. I'm not trying to be off-topic, and this may get "the dumb question of the year award". Try: www.bbsnets.com or www.docsplace.org - for a test run try: telnet://bbs.docsplace.org and make sure that your terminal client is using ANSI emulation. |

Ok, thanks for your reply, I will give them a tyry. Fred Burgess The "HAM" group is fairly active on fidonet, and you should be able to get it from any bbs w/fidonet. There can be a great variation from bbs to bbs, so it's worth shopping around. Some of them will offer filtered usenet groups, and you can probably get the sysop to block the current flooding, by modifying the filter, if it isn't blocking that stuff. Otherwise, all fidonet groups are moderated. |
