Default Shortwave newbie needs antenna help!!!

A loop antenna in your listening room or a helical in your attic maybe?

Preamp will probably be needed with either.

This is my solution too! Stringing thin, black plastic coated wire between
windows & gluing it inconspicuously to the bricks

Can you attach an antenna along your windows (outside)? That's what I
do here in an apt. It's barely noticeable. I run it from the kitchen
window to the bedroom window, about 20 feet, taped down along the
window ledges.

If you're interested, let me know and I'll be more exact.

i live at home with my parents. um my one antenna goes outside the
other is in the house

u could get a slinky and stretch it out over the cealing
and then have ur two wires and clip some alligator clips to the wires
and then clip the wires to the slinky

might work
if not

just get a long waire and wrap it around the ceiling a couple of times

hope that helped a lil

What I did when I lived in a rooming house for a while was to get some
Radio Shack speaker wire-30 feet should be sufficient-and a big roll of
duct tape. I duct taped the wire to the ceiling running NW-SE (I was
interested in Middle Eastern stations at the time). I had to put
reinforcement tape on like so:

|-|

so that the tape wouldn't come undone. The middle tape holds the antenna
up and the tape on either side reinforces the middle. It worked pretty
well.

You might be able to get away with an outdoor antenna. The ARRL has a book
on stealth antennas.

I had the same problem. I made inside the house several antennes. Longwire,
dipole with coax feeded, i tried a piece of wire attached to the central
heating system,
a piece of wire attached to the sink etc.. Al that it gave me was very loud
SW signals
but also very much noice on the band. The noice was as hard as the signals
it worked
terrible.

At last i spent money (50 Euro, or so i think) to a Active shortwave
antenne. You know
those things? It are very short antennes, like one meter long or so or even
shorter and
there is an antenne amplifier build in. I put that thing on the balcony and
my reception
was not bad. Noise was signal 0 and signals were good to hear. Very clear
reception
but not much S points ofcourse.

I played with that antenne. I made it longer, shorter etc.. only to come to
the conclusion
that it was ok as it was and all my experiments didn't make it any better.
Then after a
few weeks i decided to place the thing inside the house. I attached the
ground of the
antenne to central heating with a piece of wire and then i noticed stronger
signals !

I am now still using this thing. I have not a bad reception on SW around 4
mhz to
20 mhz. It works much better then dipoles and wires and stuff in the house..

I have heard a loop antenne may give even better results then an active
shortwave antenne.
Loops have a very low noise level. I haven't tried a loop yet. I am happy
with my active
shortwave antenne.

Hi,

I had a DX-394B and I live in a high rise. I put a wire around the perimeter
of our bedroom (that's where I had the 394) and attached it to the whip
antenna with an alligator clip and it worked great - made a huge difference
in my reception. That same wire is now attached to my Sat-800 (my best
friend now has the DX-394B) the same way and it works wonders on it too.

Take Care
