If these are your priorities, which radio is for you?
(Please forgive me for not replying to a similar thread; when I view
these groups on a browser the ability to reply is hit or miss.) OK, let's assume you want the following: - A portable, though it can be big/bulky as you don't plan to travel often - Great sensitivity to weak signals & adjacent channel rejection (these matter more than sound quality) - Don't care about LW, MW, Air, CW or what have you, but you want full coverage for SW (including between meter bands) -- You live in an apartment -- You have up to $500 to spend, and would consider used I own a dying Sony ICF 2010 and it's been 10 years since I researched them. Back then I was pretty offended with how women in retail radio shops were treated (kiss my ass, Universal in OH) so I'd like to do what I can from others' advice and reading recent Passport guides. Any info much appreciated! |

Other than the 392's built in tape recorder, these are the same radio. Both are discontinued at RS, the DX-390 about five years ago, and the DX-392 three years ago. They are still made by Sangean, which gives them the model numbers ATS818 and ATS818cs. http://www.rnw.nl/realradio/ats818.html http://www.sangean.com/worldband.html I wish Sangean had put a (politically incorrect) pack of cigarettes in the picture with that radio to give you some idea how big it is. It is about 12" wide, so it is not as easy to lug around as a YB400, Sony 7600, or Sangean 909. |

Thanks to all for the input. One last question if I may: How would
each of you recommend seeking a repair service for the 2010? Is it as simple as browsing a few directories of electronics/radio repairers, is it better to find a Sony repair dealer (there is one here in NYC) or is this a case of "The only one I'd trust my 2010 to is Bob in Pocatello, ID. He's repaired over 300!!!"...? And, from now on I'll be nicer to my A/C connection. -- JLM |

(Jennifer Michael) wrote in om: Ah, you fools, now can see the inanity of wasting your time responding to a post that had an inevitable conclusion. And she wonders why they (according to her) treat women bad at Universal. "Yes, I'd like a great radio, cheap, splendidly made, very receptive. If anyone could make a few suggestions." (read this section in a high pitch voice) My dying Sony went from DOA to having a little chest cold. Aw, my poor Sony is sick. It's my life long friend. I can support abortion, but I can't let anyone euthanize my Sony." Hell, someone probably could have told you where to buy a Red radio, you would have been happy as **** in a sewer pipe. Women. Who needs them? Don't get me wrong, they have their purposes. (nod nod, wink wink). A blonde female motorist gets pulled over by a blonde female cop. The cop says, I need to see your driver's license. The motorist says what's it look like? The cop gets frustrated and says "it has your picture on it". The motorist looks through her purse, finds and opens her compact, and stares into the compact's mirror. The motorist hands the cop the compact and says, is this it? The cop looks and gets really disgusted. The cop says "if you would have told me you were a cop, I would have let you go a long time ago". Women. I actually can appreciate your humor, though I'm sure you weren't looking to charm me. I would like to offer the following: 1) I have a fantastic voice that is rather deep 2) I went into Universal specifically for a Drake R8 and had $2,000 ready to hand over. I couldn't get anyone to deal with me, and I was only about 21 and not as assertive (read: bitchy) as I would be now. I really don't think I imagined the sexism... I noticed every time I asked a sales guy something, he would answer my uncle who was with me. It was the weirdest thing. This was 12 years ago, and perhaps they've changed. (Though I admit it's time I let go of the grudge) 3) My 2010 is about 8 years old, and I had read that it was not expected to last that long. That's why I asked if it was worth repairing or how could I get something comparable for the money since they don't make new ones. I don't see the harm in posting questions that are on topic, if naive, to this group. 4) Abortion? Egads, all I wanted was a radio. Thanks for writing, M. Keep the hate... I mean, faith. |
