This is actually a false statement. A study reported on by the AMA indicated that an individual is more likely to "shoot" a loved one than to "shoot" an intruder. There are more than 1,000,000 interdictions every year in America by law abiding citizens fending off criminals. The results were carefully sculpted. The watchword is "shoot". Most of the interdictions involving firearms do not require the property owner or victim to actually "shoot" the assailant to stave off the attack. The mere presence of the firearm, whether fired as warning, fired and missed, or brandished to the intruder will most often stop the attacker and send them flying either into submission or down the street. The study carefully focused on the "shoot" aspect. Most likely more loved ones are actually shot than intruders are shot. BUT, the study fails to consider the loss of life that would ensue if the victim did not possess a gun to begin with. Believe me folks, after listening to the police radio for years, having police in the family, and taking notice of the crime activities in my area, you are much better off with a firearm than without one. If you can drive a car, you can use a firearm. Just as you can't loose sight of where you are driving, you can never loose sight that the firearm is a weapon, and must be accorded respect. Buy a handgun safe, (the kind that can be opened in darkness in seconds) and attach it securely to some surface out of casual view. Never leave loaded guns accessible to children, never leave ammunition accessible to children. ALWAYS CHECK ANY GUN THAT YOU HANDLE TO VERIFY THAT IT IS NOT LOADED (obviously you need to load it to hunt, defend yourself, etc.). NEVER POINT THE GUN AT ANYTHING THAT YOU DON'T INTEND TO SHOOT. Too many victims for the police to use a shop vacuum on after some assailant has gotten through with them. If you feel patently incompetent to handle firearms, buy some bear strength pepper spray. Yes, they do make it, bear strength. Although less lethal weapons appeal to the humanitarians in most of us, they simply do not produce the change in attitude that firearms are capable of. If you own a gun, and are faced, in your home, by a dangerous intruder, be prepared to shoot. Always be sure that what you believe is an intruder is not in fact a loved one entering the home by some odd means (forgot the key, crawls through the window). Regards. We need to have some preparedness for all sorts of disasters. We can prepare ourselves and our own families far more easilly than we can convince our own officials. As far as guns are concerned, they are usually more dangerous to their owners than intruders. Never say never. Nothing is absolute. |
