Spam

Does anyone know if anything is being done to stop this
mess? I haven't heard a word on the news about this one.

Gregg September 20th 03 09:42 PM

Spam in general, or one in particular.

Safe assumtion is "no" for the former, "yes" for the latter.

Unfortuneately, spamming is such easy money, 30 new ones pop-up for every
one busted.

Reported 60,000+ spams and they still keep coming :-(

DougSlug September 20th 03 11:27 PM

One of my accounts has been getting completely inundated with the fake
Microsoft Update and "Undeliverable Message" virus attempts...I'm talking
about a CONTINUOUS STREAM of copies of the same thing over and over.
Fortunately, it's a junk account. The motherfu**er that is spamming me
keeps changing the domain, From line and Subject line so I have to
constantly update my filters to keep up with it. SPAMMERS, DIE!!!

It's this account that's getting hit and just start on one
of my others. I have 8 accounts.
This "pho" account is being hit every minute.

"I HOPE" that at sometime it's going to stop.

This is a big attack on usenet users, but I doubt the news media will pay
much attention unless it gets out into the general public. Usenet is a tiny
corner of the internet nowadays, and most computer users are completely
unaware of it. So the reporters are unlikely to get a first hand sample of
the spam attack, the general public doesn't start asking why the hell they
have all this spam in their mailboxes and the Internet itself doesn't slow
down a noticeable amount.

There's been some speculation on the newsgroup news.admin.net-abuse.email
that these worms are designed to be taken over by a spammer who will later
send out thousands of spam e-mails from an infected machine. In this
particular case, the worm may have been targeted at newsgroups in which
there are technically oriented users who trace the spam back to an ISP and
report the abuse. Seems plausible, but I'm just repeating someone else's
speculation.

Er, it's probably not "a" person if you're getting that many copies.
I for one am getting about 50 per hour myself (and to make things
worse, once it gets to about 100 messages unread, my Earthlink mailbox
reaches its 10MB limit, and all legitimate attempts to E-mail me get
sent back a "Undeliverable - Mailbox Full" response).

It's also not a spam - it's a full-blown virus. The "from" addresses
are forged, so there's little if any way of knowing who is sending
each of the copies you are getting, but I can almost guarantee that it
is more than one person.

You're more likely to get lots of these if:
(a) you send out a lot of E-mail (the more times your address appears
somewhere, the more likely it's on an infected machine);
(b) you're on a mailing list (I've been hit with virus bombs from a
mailing list I'm on in the past - infected machines send the message
to the mailing list, which happily sends copies to everybody on it);
(c) your address is on a website, especially one that a lot of people
happen to save pages onto their own machines.

Don Del Grande,
I'm surprised nobody has come up with a virus that pops up a window
saying "This never would have happened had you been using (choose one:
Linux, a Macintosh)"

That's true. These are coming from many ISPs.

Don Del Grande,

In this particular case, it seems to be going to usenet posters. I have
more than one e-mail address, but this is the only one getting spammed.

I prefer Bob Evans Breakfast Links.

Much fresher than 5 Months old "ham-in-a-can".

If you can find the newish "smoked flavor" SPAM, give it a try.

Sliced thin and fried, it tastes like pretty fair bacon. And it keeps a lot
better on the pantry shelf...
