Icom R8500 failure

Can anybody help me about an unexpected failure in an Icom R8500
receptor?
No more signal, no more audio output, no way to enter a new frequency
with "MW" button. The display flashes continuously.
Has anybody experienced such a phenomenon ?
Help needed since there is no Icom support in the place where I live.
Thank you.

Expensive Hobby:

it Might have taken a power hit & fried something ..
delicate & inside the set.
IS there a power problem in your area?
Was it hooked up to a Surge Protector?

E-mail ICom & see if there is a certified dealer nearby;
else check w a dealer such as Universal Radio & see what they think.
Are there internal batteries that may have failed?

The only thing I can think of is
Unplug it,
then power it on & let it sit for 24 hrs;
shut it off, hook it up & turn it on & hope for the best

- Good Luck

Dan

Greetings,

I had the same happen to an '8500 in an unheated shelter. The PLL
lost lock. One hint that this one was probably out of spec was that
the tuning was slightly inaccurate -- like, say, 20 Hz inaccurate at 6
MHz. Do you recall if it misread high or low?

You'll probably have to send it back for repair. There's quite a bit
that can be done with the software on the radio to "fix" it, but I
suspect you have a component failure and your "fix" will only make
things worse.

Aside: Has anyone gone through some of the features in the shop
manual and actually used them? Looks too easy to really dink up the
radio with all the alignment options they have.

Best of luck,

Eric

I recently experienced the same problem with my R8500 after accidentally
shutting off the power to the set with the switch on the surge protector. I
turned the unit back on with the main power switch, the display flashed for
about five minutes, and then the receiver appeared to reset itself. My R8500
is now working fine and I am able to enter frequencies manually with no
problems.

If there was a power failure in your area recently, I would suggest trying to
reset your R8500 by using the above procedure. The flashing display, loss of
audio output, and temporary loss of keyboard function seem to be common to the
R8500 after an interruption of AC power. Good luck.

David
