RADIO AUSTRALIA PREVIEWS
Edition 625
Dec. 3-5, 2003

Days and times are in UTC. An * indicates that a program is produced by
Radio Australia. All others are produced by Radio National or by other
ABC Radio networks as indicated. Further information about these
programs, as well as transcripts and on-demand audio files of particular
programs, and a wealth of supporting information can be obtained from
http://www.abc.net.au. Additional information and a key to
abbreviations and symbols used appear at the bottom of the page.

---------------------------
Weekdays
(RA or ABC News every hour on the hour)

0010 -
Thu.: BACKGROUND BRIEFING - Radio National's agenda-setting, current
affairs radio documentary program. This week: "What Insurance Crisis?"
Australians are not particularly litigious, and payouts to injured
people were not the cause of the insurance crisis. So why did the
Bouncing Castle become an uninsurable menace, and why have common law
rights been curtailed? The plot is thick with bad management, hidden
profits, and political spin. Wendy Carlisle reports. [T;%]
Fri. - HINDSIGHT - social history. This week: "Hill End". Stories loom
large about Hill End, the gold-mining town of inland NSW. It was the
first reef-mining site in the country. It was once Australia's largest
inland town. Its gold rush of the 1870s established the Sydney Stock
Exchange. The trouble is, none of these stories is true. So how has this
isolated village earned such an important place in gold-mining history?

ASIA PACIFIC (refer to 2300) [T;%]
0130 -
Wed.: RELIGION REPORT - This week: "A Dedication Mass at Parramatta
Cathedral; a storm at St Anne's Bondi". Destroyed by fire in 1996,
Sydney's Parramatta Cathedral has been restored, and was re-opened on
Saturday with a Dedication Mass. Also, St. Anne's Church at Bondi Beach
was built in 1934, and won the Sulman architecture prize the following
year. But recently the church has been at the centre of a stand-off
between parish priest Fr Paul Foley, who has been carrying out
structural changes to the church interior, and members of the
congregation who want to see the building preserved in its original
state. [T;%]

Watson on the decay of public language, the subject of his new book.
Following on the success of his prize-winning Recollections of a
Bleeding Heart, a portrait of Paul Keating PM, Don Watson has written
another book that has its origins in his experiences as Keating's
speechwriter. This time, it's a call for us to defend the language and
the culture against the mindless, manipulative 'public language' used by
politicians, bureaucrats, managers and marketers. [%]
Thu.: THE ARK - Rachael Kohn talks to some of the world's leading
religious historians and authors about curious moments in religious
history that shatter the usual perception of the past and illuminate the
present. This week: "Escape from Kabul". In 2001 Australian aid worker
Diana Thomas and seven other colleagues spent months in a Kabul
prison, held captive by the Taliban. What was their crime? [T;%]

Fri.: SOUND QUALITY - For 25 years, Tim Ritchie has been seeking out
music: the interesting, the evolutionary, the inaccessible and the
wonderful. About this week's show, Tim writes, "Some years ago I played
a track on sound quality called frankie teardrop. It probably caused the
biggest stir among listeners of anything I've played at radio
national.... and it was from the 70s. Well the band [duo] that brought
you that piece are still going - and we've got them recorded live in
august this year in spain."

1305 -
THE PLANET - Lucky Oceans with jazz, blues, folk styles, art music and
more in a show artfully arranged for radio.

details. [T;%]
Wed.: Lyle Lovett tried every trick in the book to keep from recording
an album of new songs. Since 1996’s ‘Road to Ensenada’ he’s released a
great album of covers, a live record, a collection of songs that he
recorded for films, and a greatest hits collection. He even got his leg
broken by a bull but at least he didn’t make a Christmas Album. The new
disc, ‘My Baby Don’t Tolerate,’ is classic Lyle ? he mixes southern
genres with his endearingly husky voice riding over his usual crew of
great studio musicians on his slightly twisted wry songs about Texas
today.
Thu.: An Anglo-centric edition, jointly featuring a lovely young
female voice & a veteran fiddler. According to The Guardian, Kate Rusby
has 'the most beautiful voice in England'. Kate's new CD - Underneath
the Star - delicately marries her own & traditional lyrics/tunes; her
playing guests are some of Britain’s finest folk-persons, including her
spouse, John McCusker. Even before he accidentally joined Fairport
Convention in 1969, Dave Swarbrick was widely recognised as a singular
fiddler. Swarb (as he’s generally known) is an intriguing mix of
traditionalist & musical adventurer. Not just a player, he’s composed
quite a few fine songs & tunes, which he & various friends freshly
interpret (including a brand-new tune) on his album, English Fiddler.
Fri.: Conga player and bandleader Poncho Sanchez was one of 11
children born into a Mexican-American family in Laredo, Texas. While
growing up in Southern California, he was an R&B singer before he
discovered Latin music and eventually played in the band of his musical
hero, Cal Tjader. Since Tjader’s death in 1982, Poncho has led his own
band, recording 20 albums that explore the commonalities of soul/jazz
and Latin music, usually with a special Jazz guest artist. On “Latin
Spirits” we hear jump blues songs by Louis Jordan and Joe Liggins done
Poncho style. Chick Corea is the guest jazzman on two tracks.

Wed.: TIME TO TALK - Series on politics, society and governance in
today's Pacific. Program One: "Governance ? What’s in a
Word?" When the World Bank and other aid donors talk about governance,
they use words like ‘transparency’, ‘equity’ and ‘accountability’. What
does this language mean for people in the Pacific? For centuries,
indigenous societies in the region have had their own ways of governing
family and community. Can these traditional modes of governance now be
combined with new institutions? [T;%]
Thu.: ALL IN THE MIND - a foray into the mental universe, the mind, the
brain and human behavior. This week: "Racial Bias on the Brain". A new
brain scan study suggests that interracial interactions significantly
tax your brain. The effect is most significant when you’re racially
biased to begin with. Headlines across the world have called it a
"brain scan for racism", "a neurological basis for bias" and have even
concluded, "prejudice breeds stupidity". Natasha Mitchell speaks to the
study’s authors to find out what they really think it all means. [T;%]
Fri.: IN CONVERSATION - Robyn Williams talks to scientists and those
interested in the subject, about what science has meant to their lives.

Thu.: THE BUZZ - technology understandably explained. This week: "Text,
Lies and Internet Chat Rooms". Love and lust are two of our driving
forces. As long as human beings have been around, we've been meeting
each other, fancying each other and falling for each other. [T;%]
Fri.: HIT MIX* - presented by Brendon Telfer. Find out what we're
