now only block the most outrageous ( 100 ) ones

Several ISP "acclerator" programs also cache popular websites on their own
servers, eliminating "hops" to the actual website. I have no experience
with Earthlink's, but I'll bet it created a hostfile pointing to their
cached pages. If you still want to use their program, you can easily edit
the host file in Notepad. Simply search for "yahoo" and delete any entry
that contains it.

In my XP Pro box it's in Windows/system32/drivers/etc

(Or you could just use the built-in "roll back" function in the System
Restore utility).

Most of the time, when I have problems like that, I try the following in
the command-prompt window:

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

The first command releases the IP address on the network adapter, then
the second goes out and gets a fresh one[1]. If that doesn't clear up
the problem, I go into Control Panel, open Internet properties, then
clear the history and empty the cache. In nearly all cases, that clears
up such problems for me.

[1] I'm sure you already knew about this, but I elaborated on it for the
benefit of others.
