I'm finding that my XP machine, that I use 99.9% of the time, keeps getting
"page not found" errors.
When I log on with my Linux machine, it's fine. Obviously my end...

I formatted one of my PC today and I "almost" put XP pro in but, I just
keep hearing to many bad things about it. I put win 98 in and set the XP
back until they get the bugs out.

I am having all kinds of trouble with Norton 2004 System Works.
Damn computers, I sure waste a lot of time playing with them but then,
what would I do without a computer!!!

XP is OK;
Microsoft sends security patches on a regular basis as hackers ( Or MS
employees) find
possible security flaws;
- & some of my software which crashed to " Blue Screen" on 98
runs just fine on XP..

That sounds a LOT like the behavior caused by spyware. Very likely, there's
an advertising pop-up timing out, which is derailing the whole process of
loading your page.

Spyware is specialized software that unscrupulous advertisers launch on your
computer. Usually, it tracks your browsing and "phones home" so they can
target specialized ads at you, based on the information they collect about
your interests. The worst spyware actually downloads ads to your computer
and will show them to you periodically, sometimes even if you're not on the
net!

Depending upon your browser settings, you could download the spyware from
something as simple as a malicious ActiveX script embedded in a web page,
however it is usually found bundled with "free" software like "Download
Accelerator" or various games.

The good news is that it's easy to find out if your computer has spyware.
A program called "Ad Aware" from Lavasoft is probably the best. A free
version (with no spyware!) is available he

known spyware and list them for you. You can then tell it to rid your

Good guess, Stinger. Wrong, but a good guess anyway. I hadn't even thought
of that. I ran Ad aware and Spybot but they both said I was clean. Still
working on it though. This has me baffled...

Hmmm. That makes things a little simpler.

Have you added an "ad blocker" or a custom "hosts" file lately (like this
one: http://www.everythingisnt.com/hosts.html or the one in Kazaa Lite )?

If so, it probably has Yahoo's IP listed in the file, which would 404 that
page. I've seen them filter all of MSNBC as well.

In my XP Pro box it's in Windows/system32/drivers/etc

(Or you could just use the built-in "roll back" function in the System
Restore utility).

Actually, I DID (looking ashamed) install Earthlink's "accelerator". I
found that when I dis-able it, Yahoo groups work fine. It works by
compressing all graphics. Maybe the POP-UP crap doesn't like it...
