![]() Rcvd mine today. Wow, a lot smaller than I thought. Very slick - first word that comes to mind. Nice case - cool antenna - only powers on in SW and MW. I'll try this unit for a few days and decide whether to keep it. Looks like the one for sale on EBAY went for $275. One departure from the handbook documentation is that the AC adapter no longer has to be set (using a screwdriver) for standard USA 2-prong electrical plugs. The included one is already 120 volt AC 60 HZ, and there is no way to change it. This means that international travelers will need to either get an adapter or use batteries. -- Stinger "Mark S. I got my radio the other day (less than $140 -- woo hoo) but I still can't figure out how to order a newer chip. I'm not quite sure what the chip is even for actually, but seems like good information to know. I pressed the BBC button and got some English game show so something must be working. The ROM chip*was* supported by the "F Corporation" (no idea who they are), which is the same group that did the annual editions of the hardcopy Sony Wave Handbook included with Sony SW products. I don't know if it's still being updated, but there should be a form somewhere in the package or manual that you send in for an update at a $20 cost. I think I'd try to verify that it's still being supported first. The ROM chip in the original package has four major broadcasters pre-selected on it (e.g., BBC, DW, VOA,??? with user choice for a 5th). The update used to permit you to select which 5 broadcasters you wanted FWIW. Here's the web site for F corporation: http://www.wavehandbook.com/jp/index-j.html Unfortunately, I can't read Japanese, but it seems to say the last update was done in February '03. The far right button on mine came programmed for RFI. Presumably that's Radio France international - but so far the only RFI I've picked up with the radio is from my computer network and all the other gizmos I have at the house. |
