What's the best SW deal you ever got?
Yesterday I was thinking about what a great deal I got
on the Radio Shack DX-399 (Sangean ATS-606) when RS closed them out at $40. I bought 2. That got me wondering what you consider to be your "steal of a lifetime". The recent amazon.com pricing of $150 for the Sony SW-07 comes to mind. What did you purchase for a great price, or even get free? |
"Sanjaya" wrote in message .net... What did you purchase for a great price, or even get free? Purchased at an estate sale a perfect looking (no scratches or worn spots) working National NC-140 for $1.00. Don't know but suspect the folks holding the sale thought it didn't work as it requires an external speaker which it didn't have. I didn't ask if it worked or not and just assumed that due to the asking price that it didn't. It was short the band switch knob which I located on the internet. The damn knob cost me more than the radio. About 30 years ago I walked out of an estate sale with an SP-600 and an NC-183D for $60.00. The 183D looked almost new and every thing worked great. The 600 looked a little ragged around the edges but was in great working condition. RM~ |

Went to an auction about a year ago and bought a Yaesu FRG-7 for
14 bucks. Darn thing is in great shape and it has become my #1 SW receiver. At this same auction I bought a Hickok 534 tube tester..almost mint shape...for a buck. What did you purchase for a great price, or even get
free? About three years ago I acquired the Realistic/RS version of the Sangean ATS818C (DX398? Is that right?) from the local R.S. store, where I had seen it languishing on the 'out-for-repairs' shelf down behind the counter for nearly a year. Apparently, the RS home office told this store it was unrepairable, and the store gave the customer credit or his money back or something, but this radio sat forever with everything it came with. Anyway, right around Christmastime I was shopping and went into RS for some things, and curiousity finally got the better of me. The guy told me the backstory of the radio, and then said I could have it for nothing, just get it out of his store. I of course had NO problem with that. He went in the back, got a big box, and cleaned the shelf into the box, and said 'take it all. Happy Holidays..." Well, there was the radio, but also a Weller 65w soldering gun, a RS 30w soldering pencil, and a number of little items, all of which were supposedly in bad enough shape to get rid of. Turns out the radio only needed the BFO pot re-attached to the board (the RS office must have assumed the board was cracked, and replacing the radio was indeed the easier and cheaper of the choices) but the board was fine. So, after fixing the pot, I had a brand new-looking, working DX398 for free! Plus, the soldering gun needed a new tip and some rewiring, but works and looks good as new. The soldering pencil was in perfect shape. A good friend who was becoming interested in shortwave got a nice radio from me that year! Linus |
I believe the ATS818C is the RS Dx-392.

Some months later I met his wife, who was putting out large folded boxes on the curb the night before trash night. Slammed on the brakes, backed up into the driveway and offered to help her "clean out". I got an almost new Sony SW-100s on the Universal Radio web site for $175.
It sells for about $400 new. Though used it was in excellant condition. All I needed to buy was an adaptor. I figure it would easily go for $275 on Ebay. Sanjaya wrote in message .net... In Sept, I purchased the Sony ICF SW-77 from the local Sony Store here
in San Juan, PR for $300!!! I posted the bargain on this and another board and they went fast after stateside residents called and ordered theirs for an additional $20 shipping and handling fee. |
My Hammarlund SP-600-JX-17. I paid nothing for it. In 1980 I aquired a portable color tv that supposedly didn't work. I brought it home, fixed a cold solder joint, and it worked fine. My friend wanted the color tv and offered the Hammerlund, a mint Vinking Ranger, and a few more pieces of equipment. The only piece I have left is the Hammerlund. A local tech restored it for me 2 years ago and did a wonderful job. I've added an outboard product detector and a Hammarlund matching speaker. -- 73's Rick Drake R8 R8B ICOM R75 Yaesu 7700 Hammarlund SP-600-JX-17 "If you try to fail and succeed, which have you done?" Sanjaya schrieb: That got me wondering what you consider to be your "steal of a lifetime". The recent amazon.com pricing of $150 for the Sony SW-07 comes to mind. What did you purchase for a great price, or even get free? 4 weeks ago I got an IC-PCR1000 with a minor fault on the connector of the diskriminator output in addition with a discone antenna for EUR 152 shipping included. The antenna itself sells for EUR 95 new and I gave the antenna away for EUR 25 plus shipping to another lucky guy as I already had another very good discone antenna. So I have the PCR1000 for EUR 127 wich is a steal for this thing. I had a PCR1000 back in 1998/99 but I "killed" the HF-board when i tried to modify the 2nd IF-stage.... :-( Got a NRD-525 then in ugly condition because it sat on the shelf in the livingroom of a smoker and was never used or even touched for years. But I got it for DM 300 (EUR 154). This was a _r_e_a_l_(!) steal. I gave this thing a full bath in propylene alcohol and after that it looks and works like new. I added a MuRata CFJ-K13 (2,4khz) on the AUX and a CFJ-K8 (1.3khz) on the NARROW position. I replaced the FL2 with a CFW-455HT (6khz) and shielded the FL1 arrangement. This gave a very noticeable improvement to the 525. Lucky as I am I was offered USD100 to ship the spare RF-board (european version) of the PCR1000 to the US. At the same time I was offered the RS-232-board to remote control the NRD-525 -I was looking for- from another guy in the US for USD100. So I hardly need to touch the knobs on my 525 :-) I have it working in my basement apartment with an FD-antenna in the huge attic at the 6th floor. My discone antenna is also sitting in the attic. Also a magnetic loop antenna with the capacitor driven by remote control. Having a bunch of cables running through an old chimney wich is out of use from my apartment to the attic. Best regards from Berlin/Germany, Volker |
I own an Icom 735 that has given me 10 years trouble free listening. It is
a ham radio, but doubles as an excellant, very sensitive receiver. I paid full price and it was worth it. I been able to receive many weak signals off this radio, where any of my portable radios would fail. Sanjaya wrote in message .net... I used it from about the time I was 11 years old until... When I was around 17 (1970) someone gave me a Hallicrafters S38B. I did some "upgrades" to it, adding an isolation transformer, a "hack" to replace the dial cord, and an early silicon diode noise limiter. Lasted until I purchased my first "modern" receiver, a Sony ICF-7600 around 1985. I gave the S38B to a friend of friend who wanted it for listening to the BBC. What did you purchase for a great price, or even get free? My grandfather gave me his Johnson Ranger, and a Hammarlund BC 794 Super Pro. Bet purchase was an auction. 3 1924-26 Charles Freshman's and one '26 Sun Model 50 TRF, all for $1. Found an antique shop in Crete, Illinois with a Halli S-40B for $10. But my fave is my Philco model 90 floor model for $37 at an antique store in Rockford. They said it didn't work. They were wrong. heheheh. |

Hey, I have an S-20R that I haven't turned on yet. What do you like about it? It's what I *did* like about it at the time. I haven't used it for at least 20-years. It was my first shortwave receiver with a BFO, bandspread, noise limiter, flywheel tuning and nice audio. I actually used it as a test bed for all kinds of mod's, including improving the high-end (above 15-Mhz) sensitivity and overall selectivity. Best of all I built a digital frequency display for it. It cost about $100 for the parts back then! It was a real luxury in those days to have a visual tuning accuracy of 1-Khz. I heard more countries on the S-20R than on any receiver since, mainly because those were my QSL days and I was enthralled by the thrill of the hunt. I think many SWL's will tell you that they have a fond regard for their first real communications receiver, even if it now seems like a dinosaur by today's standards. -----= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =----- http://www.newsfeeds.com - The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----== Over 100,000 Newsgroups - 19 Different Servers! =----- |

What did you purchase for a great price, or even get free? About 2 years ago I found a brand spankin new in the box Magnavox D2999. I paid $2 or $250. The price might not have that great, but for a radio that hadn't been produced in over 10 years I was happy with the price. I had keep an eye out for quite some time for that unit. I think I got the last new unit in existance. The rig is on of my favorites. I have a penchant for nice portables. Good reading John |
