What do I look for? Do I need a book? -- preesi You may need a book to determine the time and frequency of the desired broadcasts. Google searchs should be able to find that info also. For RTTY, CW, and SSTV, you need to be looking in the amateur radio bands. If you go to http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/reg.../bandplan.html , the amateur radio band plans are listed. You will also need to study up on what bands are most appropriate for the time of day that you are listening. Some bands are good in the daytime while others are good at night. |

There's loads of stuff out there in the daytime. And if you've in the Pacific Northwest, forget it for the time being. God hates us at the moment and the reception here is terrible. FW |

Except on really outstanding days, those antennas are totally inadequate.
Heck! Even inside the square metal tube I live in I can get much stuff day and night, using just the telescoping antennas on all my radios, from the DX-392 down. And I live near Galveston Bay in SE Texas. I was beginning to wonder if you lived in one of those magnetic anomolies where signals don't go in or out. Those exist all over the US. Bill, K5BY |

What kind of metal tube? The kind with wheels? I also live in a Farady
cage and can't get much of anything off a whip. "WShoots1" wrote in message ... Except on really outstanding days, those antennas are totally inadequate. Heck! Looks like they're all going to try an tell you that you have no chance in hearing what you want...lol....keep trying. *READ A LOT* Pressi, you can't read enough in this hobby and then take action and get out there and do you up a good antenna for what you're trying to hear. Take your time and have fun, more importantly.:-) |
Jim: What kind of metal tube? The kind with wheels?
Well, it did have some. It's an older 12x65 mobilehome, with aluminum siding and steel roof. The tiedowns, including those over the top, are probably grounding the mobile, maybe even better than the ground I have in my little office/shack. I suspect I'm picking up sigs off the phone and power wiring. In fact, when I clip onto a grounded wrought iron chandelier in the dining area or bathroom, I get better signals on all bands, even AM and FM. And 3210 is better on that, using my eTR7, than my DX-392 gets on the 65-foot outside antenna! The ground wire is, of course, inductively (or capacitively) coupled to a mighty long antenna, the area power lines. LOL Of course, there is some noise on the line sometimes, but I usually win. My trailer may be antenna -- or a reflector. Sometimes outside, I can hold a portable close to the alum skin and get better sigs using just the radio's whip. 73, Bill, K5BY |
I have similar experiences. Had to mount my random wire 5 feet above roof
to keep the steel from reflecting/interfering with the signal... "WShoots1" wrote in message ... Jim: What kind of metal tube? The kind with wheels? Well, it did have some. Yep. What I think it is Steve, is that most people( I used to be one of them) don't think there's much to hear during the daytime and when they do listen, they don't go high enough in the spectrum to hear anything. Lots of listening, both BCB and shortwave to hear during the day.:-) |
