Sometimes signal strength is pretty high, and they boom in. They use (mostly) "clipped" ham rigs and can be heard worldwide. I know a guy who used to listen to them in germany, so you can get them too. Interesting. Actually, I am not that far from Lake Superior (about 150 miles southwest of there, in Minnesota) but I'm not sure if the iron ore boats on the Big Lake are using HF or what.
