The antenna should be fairly taught, but not to the degree that you seem to
be describing. The antenna is a simple piece. You can try putting a drop of fine machine oil in to its bushing. Try not to get it all over other parts. You may have to open the set to access the bushing. Or, best yet, take the radio to a place that services electronic equipment. If the bushing is defective, it is most likely possible to still order a new antenna from Sony parts, even though this is a very old model. If not, a replacement can be easily found. These radio antennas are very standard. The 7600 is a very good radio, and should perform very well for you. -- Greetings, Jerry Greenberg GLG Technologies GLG ========================================= WebPage http://www.zoom-one.com Electronics http://www.zoom-one.com/electron.htm ========================================= "Robert Elsinga =8-)" t wrote in message ... Hi! I just bought myself a (used, 1yo) Sony ICF-SW7600GR from e-bay. It is as new, but I find the antenna not turning smoothly. Normally you extend the antenna rod and then rotate/turn it around the base. Mostly for FM reception, since there the direction in which the antenna points is important, but also for SW listening with the 7600GR lying on its back or the built-in stand, to point the antenna straight up. With my 7600GR, rotating the antenna doesn;t go smoothly at all. It is like the part inside the radio is jammed or has a lot of friction. It does turn, but needs a lot of torque to do so and makes snapping sounds while rotating in one direction (the other direction makes no sounds but also rotates difficultly)... and the radio casing moves lightly at the point where the antenna is in the casing. Is this normal? What can I do about it? I do have the original receipt, but it is not in my own name ofcourse since I bought it second hand. Any tips appreciated. -- Robert Elsinga =8-) e-mail: robert (at) elsinga.org/elsinga.net Personal website: www.elsinga.org, Home @ N 52"55.812', E 05"51.509' Voice: +31 871 90 11 11 (EUR 0,41/min), fax2mail: +31 842 22 76 82 |

The ICF-SW7600GR is in no way "very old", it's a current model. BTW, I could not find any obvious way to take my SW7600G's antenna (which rotates much too easily) apart. At least to me, it looked pretty much like a one-way part. I removed it from the casing this afternoon (just remove the 5 screw on the back, take the back panel off and remove the 6th screw on the base of the antenna). The botom part of the antenna is in one pice, so is the extendable part. -- Robert Elsinga =8-) e-mail: robert (at) elsinga.org/elsinga.net Personal website: www.elsinga.org, Home @ N 52"55.812', E 05"51.509' Voice: +31 871 90 11 11 (EUR 0,41/min), fax2mail: +31 842 22 76 82 |

You may have to open the set to access the bushing I have just opened the 7600GR and removed the antenna to apply a drop of oil (intended for a sewing machine). Now the antenna turns a little more easy, but (holding the bushning with a vice) turning the antenna makes the bottom part quite hot. This indicates a lot of friction... But, I won;t have any problem with the antenna turning by itself... =8-) -- Robert Elsinga =8-) e-mail: robert (at) elsinga.org/elsinga.net Personal website: www.elsinga.org, Home @ N 52"55.812', E 05"51.509' Voice: +31 871 90 11 11 (EUR 0,41/min), fax2mail: +31 842 22 76 82 |

I just pulled mine out of the box (arrived today) and my antenna is tight like that, too. :P I guess I have to live with it as I am not comfortable opening it up and putting oil on it. I used to be, but after making a few mistakes, I decided I was not electronically inclined except for computers. :P Any other ideas? Isn't there a screw to loosen or something? Or do I just have to be really careful when turning the antenna? |
