Default *ON* Topic Post..........

I broke out the mint DX100 (I know.....it's not the best) but after reading I
think Franks post about it I figured I'd put it to work. I set up a little
listening post in the living room.

Here's my question, actually two or three of them. I ran a 500ft. spool of 12
guage and hooked it up. I have a made-shift handle on the spool, so from the
receiver-out the window to the top of the deck on the inside part (it was dark)
I have a hook and I just hung the spool up on the hook. What type of antenna
would that be so too speak? I plan on running a little around underneath the
deck when it warms up. It really is doing a great job, night time as well as
day.

#2 Since I've turned it on, last night around 10p, I decided just to leave it
on or when a tv commercial would come on I'd listen to it (by then it was rock
solid-no drift whatsoever) it has a 'standby.' When you hit it, it moves the
receive meter all the way (buries it.) Is this bad to leave it on 'standby'
for a long time or is there a certain amount of timebefore I should take it off
that? I thought about it and decided to just turn the volume down to be safe.

But after about a little over an hour, that piece is pretty much
drift-free......after two hours forget it, it isn't going anywhere. It's
pretty nice to break out my first receiver ever, I'm having a lot of fun
turning the dial. :-)

It looks like all the standby position does is mute the audio and disable
the S meter. The AC current draw stays the same (about 32 ma) and the local
oscillator keeps running. I don't see much practical difference between
turning the volume down and using the standby position.

Does that long antenna cause any image problems? I had a set a while
back that would repeat stations three or four times on the AM dial when
they were 'over antennaed'.

OK Frank, I appreciate the info, I was just curious.
Thanks

Haven't ever had a problem with it Mike. Like I said, it's a spool of 500ft.
of wire but only maybe 10ft. is exposed (straightened out) and the spool is
hooked to a hook on the top of the inside of the deck.

So I don't know what kind of 'antenna' that would be. {?} I'm not going to
hook a buttload of wire to it, maybe thirty-fourty ft. just circled around the
inside of the deck. No big deal.

I'm very lucky to live in a pretty much rf free environment. Some of the
stories I read in here that some of you guys/gals have to go through would blow
me away if I had to deal with those problems with interference.
