Because the Clear Channels and Viacoms of this world now own so many
stations in major markets, the markets are locked up. The current rules
allow them to own some money-losers in the same markets as big money-
makers, just to maintain a lock on the market -- the big money-makers
subsidize the money-losers.

In the past, such money-losers would be more likely candidates for sale to
an upstart like Air America.

In the current climate, it will take them longer to start buying.

I rather doubt they'll buy any stations at all...

Is Air America available on shortwave for us to listen to in the UK please?

Thanks

The big networks haven't taken over the AM band in Chicago. The 50kw clear
channel stations have always been in the networks, with the exception of
WGN. The only big daytime signal the networks have picked up is AM 1000
WMVP. There are some network smaller stations, but they hardly overwhelm
the market, maybe because the market is already overwhelmed by the big
Chcago signals. WNTD is listenable around most of Chicago, but several
other city and suburban stations are about as good, and aren't in major
networks, either.

Here's the Illinois list, maybe about a third are listenable in Chicago.

http://tinyurl.com/3xa2q

Anyway, I'm sure none of those choices are perfect, and given the short time
frame they were operating with, WNTD may have just about the only choice. I
don't know. Chicago is filled with independant time brokered stations, but
I suppose most of them have long term commitments or loyal customers in much
of the time slots needed in Air America's broadcast day. Still, I heard one
of the brokered stations soliciting programs just a few days ago.

Hey Mike,

Let's say there were a group called rec.publishing.newspaper. The group is
isn't quite named correctly, as the group's charter clearly says the group
is for hobbyists interested in all aspects of publishing.

Would the stories printed in the newspaper be off topic in
rec.publishing.newspaper?

They'll be back in court to deal with the L.A. issues next week.

Unfortunately, no.

You can catch it on the web.

URL:http://play.rbn.com/?url=airam/airam/live/live.rm

You can also find a "pirate" Ogg Vorbis feed at
URL:http://bigelow-springs.net/airamerica/.

Archives there, too.

They are still broadcasting Asian language programming as of 8:15am, central

According to
http://www.guampdn.com/news/stories/20040416/localnews/238521.html
one of them (Evan Montvel-Cohen) used to be "chief of staff for former
Republican Sen. Tommy Tanaka" and "collected and spent nearly $15,000 for
several negative television and print ads about Democratic Sen. Ben
Pangelinan" -- in Guam, that is.

Well, that's interesting. Further:

"Montvel-Cohen had been hired by attorney Randall Cunliffe to dig deeper
into a list of alleged illegal voters that had been presented as evidence by
attorneys for losing candidate Joseph Ada."

"A year later, Montvel-Cohen was chairman of "Concerned Citizens for Honesty
and Integrity in Government," which collected and spent nearly $15,000 for
several negative television and print ads about Democratic Sen. Ben
Pangelinan and several Republican candidates."

The news story has Cohen going after both Democrats and Repblicans, although
Cohen is associated with the Republicans. I suppose Cohen doesn't have to
be partisian Democrat or Republican. Maybe he's in it just for the fight.
Air America is certainly strident enough.

Do you think Cohen and Liu each might have "Anger Management" problems? I
mean Cohen didn't have to stop the check. The LA issue would get resolved
the same either way. And Liu didn't have to kick Air America off either of
his stations. Again, the issue would get fixed behind the scenes. And if
Liu was really getting $600/hr out of Air America, this contest will get
real expensive, real fast.

Thanks for the link!

And I don't think they are back as of 12:45 EDT either, though I do have a
problem with a Wisconsin station here, but still hearing non-English underneath.

It's past noon here. Still broadcasting Asian programming.

I wish they'd broadcast tapes of the conversations between Mr. Cohen and Mr. Liu. Now, that could be VERY entertaining!!

I don't know. Air America's website had some sarcastic and unclever press
releases, one of which was crowing about their court victory in New York.
The pages came up blank the last time I checked.

Still Asian language programming. 1:15pm.

Ahh, back to text! Weird glitch, I guess.

Here's a quote from a story linked from the drudgereport:

"Air America chairman Evan Cohen said the company had not asked the court to
act in Los Angeles, and was pursuing other options there, including finding
a new "more responsible and mature" business partner. "

http://tinyurl.com/23qkm

So what's with this Evan Cohen guy, anyway? If he can't say anything nice
about his CURRENT business partner, should he say anything at all? If this
guy likes flame wars, he can do it for free on usenet.

Or is it Chinese? I don't even know that much.

Guess we'll have to find out exactly when that court order was to take effect.
Is/was Air America a weekday operation?

Maybe they'll be back on Monday.

Generally, yes. Air America has something like 17 hours of new programming
a day. I heard repeats of the earlier shows during the night.

WNTD is one of the few stations which increases power at night. Their city
transmitter is 1 kw during the day, and their south suburban transmitter is
5 kw with a directional antenna.

Air America has a couple of original evening shows during the weekend.
Weekend days are open, and I suppose the local stations fill the time with
brokered programming.

Maybe they'll be back on Monday.

Yeah, and when they come back, they owe us a good explaination!!
