ANTENNAS etc.
We'll be moving to southern Arizona.
I'd like to continue MW-DX without interference from Mexican AM transmitters. Is there any way to set up an outside antenna to receive "from the north" only ? For loopstick radios, I was thinking of a grounded metal plate on the back of the radio.... I don't think a loop would work for this application... Any other ideas on blocking directional interference ? rj |

Not easily. A phased vertical array with a cardiod pattern could give a sharp null in one direction, but is not practical for a backyard installation. For loopstick radios, I was thinking of a grounded metal plate on the back of the radio.... Remember, the signal is coming in off the ionosphere at a pretty high angle. I don't think a loop would work for this application... I think it might if you could steer the loop to notch out the offending station. Art N2AH |

Not easy with a portable radio with a built in rod antenna. Simply move the
radio for best reception. For radios using an external antenna (and preferrably with an S meter), you can phase just about any two antennas together to get a steerable, unidirectional pattern. I can throw out two 100 ft pieces of wire on the ground and null local 'super pest' 1290khz (5 kw and 3 miles away) down enough to hear stations under at night. Take a look at this: http://www.qsl.net/wa1ion/index.html Read some of the articles and get a feeling for what you can do, especially the "broad band phasing" unit (scroll down a bit). Questions? Ask here ! jw K9RZZ Milwaukee |
