What are the odds of having your military records in one location and
your driving records in another mysteriously "destroyed" in
purportedly unrelated events, with no remaining trace, during a 2-year
period right before you ran for the highest political office in the
land as the candidate of the party that lives and dies by muckraking?

Whole lot of Americans over there agreed with me as well. btw: I spent the

French people were very kind, they sure as hell spoke better English than
most of us Americans who tried to speak a few words of French.

I would rate them a hell of a lot friendlier than the Brits!

We tend to judge the people in a country by the actions of their
government.. which is one reason so many people hate Americans.. they don't
know the people, only the leaders..

It means that Bush is a religious fundamentalist, just like Osama. They
both scare me.

The difference, of course, is that President Bush won't cut your head
off if you don't convert to his religion (whatever religion that is).

The difference, of course, is that Osama has a fraction of the power that
Bush has.

Being the Christian fundamentalist that Bush is, and believing as he does
that his God specifically placed him in the office of the presidency, more
than a few people have wondered aloud if he might feel some sort of divine
mandate towards bringing about (or encouraging us towards) the Biblical
Armageddon, thereby ushering in the era for which his kind spend so much
time on their knees praying for. (Come, sweet Jesus.) I feel safe in
assuming that Bush believes God placed him in the presidency in order to
further the Divine will; the problem lies in ascertaining that will. I'm not
comfortable with the thought of anybody running the country and influencing
the entire world based on what they believe their God is telling them to do,
especially when they are fundamentalist proponents of a religion that claims
that the end of the world is a good thing.

Bush believes that he is an agent of God just as much as Osama believes it
of himself. They both believe that they worship the One True God(tm). And
they're both frightening. Not as frightening as the thought of Kerry taking
over, but still....

And what, by the way, does any of this have to do with shortwave? ;)

Traditional propaganda international SW broadcasting is being cut back. But
there must have been 20 SW transmitters started in the US over the last

Producing the programming is probably far more expensive than running the
transmitters, although much more of the international broadcasters
programming is now being taken from domestic radio sources, rather than
being specially produced by specially for shortwave. Normally, foreign
language programming is the first to get trimmed.

Most governments expect some justification for their expenses, and SW
broadcasting is vunerable. The Cold War is over, I don't think there was
ever much evidence that international SW broadcasting between first world
nations made much difference.

One of the BBC executives said something like their target audience was
"opinion formers and decision makers" and they were dropping SW broadcasting
to North America because they didn't think such people were listening.
Also, the BBC is able to sell some programming to US domestic stations.

A buck a minute, huh? Now, if I only had something important to say! eg

The rate can be lower for big time buyers. Brother Stair says broadcasters
have offered him time as low as seven or eight dollars an hour, with the
provision that he can be bumped off without warning if the station owner can
find a buyer at a better rate.

However, while broadcasters are expected to pay for their airtime, there's
no requirement that they have anything important to say.

And there's plenty of time for sale, not only for evangalists, but for

most
anybody who has a few bucks and is just bustin' out with Special

Knowledge.

And there's certainly no shortage of -them-.

Yes, but subset of the Special Knowledge group that actually has any money
is smaller. Some of SW radio's most entertaining programming comes when a
station owner gets on the air and gripes about the deadbeats.
