It's hard to go wrong with one as an entry level set, I'd say. (And, unlike the predecessor, it encourages the use of presets for SW.) It's the most inexpensive full-featured SW receiver (including truly sideband selective SSB and synch), has good ergonomics (it's a Sony after all), and performance isn't bad at all. Of course it does have its weaknesses (like 2nd IF imaging problems and not as good strong signal handling as more expensive receivers), but all in all it's certainly not a bad deal in its class. There is a good review here that will help you make up your mind: http://www.radiointel.com/portwars.htm I have the Sony and I like it but I don't know if I would recomend it for someone just starting with shortwave. The reason is that you have to use it with the wave guide or you will have trouble moving around the bands. There is no button to do this and no idicator of the Meter Band on the display. If you don't care about SSB reception the Grundig is fine for SW and is the cheapest of the 3. I must say though that the Kaito 1102 is probably a better radio than the Grundig and is fine for a beginner. It is smaller though and the sound isn't as good as the Grundig. |

what would be your recommendations The 2010, obviously. Michael Bryant, WA4009SWL Louisville, KY R75, S800, RX320, SW77, ICF2010K, DX398, 7600G, 6800W, RF2200, 7600A, Degen 1102, Degen 1103, GE SRll, Pro-2006, Pro-2010, Pro-76 (remove "nospam" to reply) |

SSB clarification may, however, not be sufficient to you because of its 100 Hz steps and inavailability of fine tuning; the 7600GR with its analog fine tuning is at an advantage there. Do note that these receivers are very different in size, the 2010 is not extremely compact by today's standards while it's rather easy to lug around the 7600GR almost anywhere. Something with performance equal to or better than the former (plus fine tuning) in the format of the latter would be nice. (It would be possible, as the ICF-SW07 has shown.) The Radio Netherlands review of this model pretty much says it all
(http://www.rnw.nl/realradio/html/icf-sw7600gr.html). It's the best radio in it's class, in my opinion. Very sensitive, with a good sync detector that's far more useful than I expected it to be. It has attenuation and a fine tuning wheel that works very nicely when listening in SSB. Go for it! It's a great value. Steve (Riz) wrote in message om...
