= = = ... Hi Ok right now I'm using my JRC NRD-525 with a 35 Ft dipole and a 4:1 Current balun coupled with a MFJ-959 pre-amp/tuner. I don't use the tuner that often. As you know it amps the noise too along with the signal so I use only it when absolutely neccessary. I'm on the 23rd floor of a building so I get good signals. Lucky LUCKY, Forget the Dipole ETC. Since your are up 23 Floors (10-12Ft X 23 = 230-276 Feet) Vertical "Drop" Antenna # 1. - Buy 100-200 Feet of TV 300 Ohm Twin Lead. - Take the Far-End and 'bare' the Wires, then Twist the ends together. - Attach a 8 Ounce Fishing Weight to the Far-End. - Take the Near-End and 'bare' the Wires, then insert/connect them to the Antenna and Ground Terminals for your Receiver. - Lower the TV Twin Lead out the Window for your antenna. Vertical "Drop" Antenna # 2. - Buy 100-200 Feet of TV 300 Ohm Twin Lead. - Take the Far-End and 'bare' the Wires, then Twist the ends together. - Attach a 8 Ounce Fishing Weight to the Far-End. - Take the Near-End and 'bare' the Wires, then connect them to the 300 Ohm-End of a TV 300 Ohm to 75 Ohm Matching Transformer. - Connect the 75 Ohm-End to a 6-25 Foot piece of TV 75 Ohm Coax Cable. {Enough Coax Cable to go from the Window to the Radio.) - Buy a "F" to SO-239 Adapter (RadioShack Catalog # 278-258) to 'connect' the TV Coax Cable to the So-239 Jack on the Radio. - Lower the TV Twin Lead out the Window for your antenna. I'm on the 23rd floor of a building so I get
good signals. Good deal, you can have quite the setup living up that high. I also have a 4:1 balun, for whatever reason...I only used it once and it went into the closet. I got it out last week. To you and the more knowledgable in here. What exactly would a 4:1 balun be used for? I figured to string up some wire or dipole and be able to run coax into your shack. I'm sure there is a better reason. ;-) |

Additionally, I check the 'discrepancy frequencies' on Simons list vs. the
other list at sign on, and 5746 was not being used at 2200 yesterday. Steve, Not to sound like a jerk or anything, but I don't care if the NSA said it wasn't being broadcast on that freq and at that time, I know what I heard and that's all that matters to me. It doesn't matter to me if they don't use that freq ever again actually, at least I know I've heard it now. I thought it was some big time target or something with all the posts in here about it. Turned on the radios and badda-bing....there it was. I've followed enough schedule and logs from ones *in the knows* ....to know that they aren't always *in the knows*. |
A 4:1 balun is commonly used with a folded dipole, but has other uses as
well. you could just run a buttload of wire to it though couldn't you Steve and then run your coax to the receiver? I read up about them. I know when I was persuaded to get it, it was in the thinking of some day txing on it. |

Well, I hate to disagree, but they were not on 5746 on Saturday at 2200. And they were not there at 2215 nor anytime in between as I was monitoring that frequency on a separate receiver. They were however on 11545, 9251 and 6959. Now, if you can point me to a logging that shows LP on 4 frequencies at once I might just be inclined to 'believe' you. I'm not sure what you heard on 5746, but it was certainly not LP. That is not to say that you did not hear it on 9251. As I said before, you did post the logging under a schedule that is known to have discrepancies (5746 at 2200 on Saturday being just one of them), so perhaps it was wishful thinking on your part. They certainly may have been there on Friday as they do use that frequency (5746) at 2200 (on Fridays). Sorry, can't let you slide on this one! dxAce Michigan USA http://www.iserv.net/~n8kdv/dxpage.htm |

One can run a 'buttload' of wire to most anything. However it will not necessarily work well. dxAce Michigan USA http://www.iserv.net/~n8kdv/dxpage.htm I read up about them. It's funny cause my dipole is made out of 300Ohm Twinlead. And at one time
before I got the balun I had the ends twisted together!. It was like a mini loop really since I soldered the leads to an adapter. The problem in this building is that someone would probably call the office if they saw the wire hanging or try to pull it down themselves. Now I was going to do this. The next highest floor is the 24th and that's it. Not much higher to get to the roof. I was going to take magnetic wire and crazy glue it along the very top of the roofs sides and run it down to my window. But, I bought some and let it hang out my window while trying it's reception properties. The reception was terrible. Was this because the wire is so, so thin? I wanted to use very thin wire so it couldn't be seen. What do you think? Lucky "RHF" wrote in message om... = = = "Lucky" wrote in message = = = ... J.A. uses a wellbrook loop in his apt. he says it works great. put out a few Q here, or google it and see what you find. how bout it- RHF ? you hang in the antenna/yahoo gps, what have you got to say??? ymmv- just my .02...
