The segmentation of the shortwave bands on these type of radios has
bugged me for a long time. I think it would be cheaper for them just to
put in full coverage to 30 Mhz. That would eliminate the sliding band
select switch and probably simplify the circuitry.

Any ideas as to WHY they do things the way they do?

Prolly tuned front end circuits to help against overload and images.
Strong signal handling would probably be absolutely inacceptable
otherwise.

Sorry Bruce. Most of these "Grundig Clones" are really the originals.

Grundig has a license to market these Tecsun and Degen radios under its name
in the US, Europe, and Japan, while Degen and Tecsun market the radios under
their own names in China.

There are two major eBay stores that sell the Degen and Tecsun versions
directly to anyone who has eBay.

Buying one of these through eBay is relatively painless. Both of these
sellers have a good reputation. Shipping is relatively high, but that's to
be expected. And even with shipping of $20, you can get a radio delivered
for about half of what you would have to pay to buy the Grundig brand in the
US.

And sometimes, you can buy one that simply isn't available anywhere else,
namely the Degen DE1103 -- a gem of a radio!
