For the last few nights on 1020 KHz where I normally hear KDKA out of
Pittsbugh I've been hearing a non english voice (French?) and the "tick-tock" of what sounds like a time signal. During this time of solar storms what is that I'm hearing? George - Daytona Beach, FL http://www.MilAirComms.com |

I don't recall it's exact frequency off the top of my head, but it's roughly close to 3 times 1020. Odd stuff happens in radio, sometimes, most especially in shortwave radio. Tony |

Perhaps the french (Quebec) station is as well, or you're hearing them both together. |

1.020 MHz Time Signal? : This is a Cuban time station on MW I believe...
Cuba is the only nation using MW for time signal relay purposes. I believe that the rest of the radio programming is newsradio, like ABC Newsradio. CHU is on 3330. At any rate, it would not be a harmonic, but rather a subharmonic. dxAce Michigan USA |

The time signal ticks are part of their programming, also news, etc. Sometimes (if not all) they send a 'RR' in code every now and then. This may be part of a jamming effort in this case. dxAce Michigan USA |

It's 3330.0 Yes, CHU is on 3330, but no, 1020 is not a harmonic of 3330, or any frequency greater than 510 kHz. What you hear on 1020 is Radio Reloj (spanish for "Clock Radio") out of Cuba. They broadcast news items with the ticking in the background and a time announcement at the top of each minute, as well as a morse code "RR". -- Mike Westfall, N6KUY, WDX6O Los Alamos, NM (DM65uv) Online logbooks at http://dxlogbook.gentoo.net Remove the Reptile to Reply |
