Hello,
Having "played" with a friend's heavily modified ICOM IC-R75, I believe this radio is also a "defective" design and is, in fact, a fraud (my opinion). It appears, at least to me, to be a "bottomless modification pit" costing enough money (and aggravation and disappointment) to make it well worthwhile to just forget about this "Japanese wonder" and buy the Grundig Satellit 800 which costs $449.95 or less. No expensive or inconvenient modifications are necessary for the Grundig! And, it gives at least 95% of the performance of a Drake R8B or AOR AR7030 Plus at only one-third the price. My friend likes his radio; however, I've commented to him that if he likes it so much, why does he have to keep modifying it? His radio has cost him, thus far, over $1000. (And, he's not a "nut." His concerns with the performance of his radio are well-founded.) For that kind of money, you could buy a Drake or an AOR. If ICOM were truly a class act, again in my opinion, they would upgrade the 'R75 as its shortcomings are well-known by now, and they should even offer to arrange "fixes" for those radios already in service. Best, Joe |

Y'know, when ICOM does well, they usually do VERY well. When they do poorly, they produce the R1 and the R75. Unfortunately, one thing they always do is handle criticism *very* poorly. Especially ICOM America. I wonder if Mr. Inoue (sp!) knows what is being done in his name over here? -- Eric F. Richards, "Nature abhors a vacuum tube." -- J. R. Pierce, Bell Labs, c. 1940 |

According to most R75 owners, it's the best receiver on the planet and with only a few hundred small Kiwa mods, is superior to the R-390. Is this not true? -- Brian Denley http://home.comcast.net/~b.denley/index.html |

I *was* an R75 owner. Great value? Yep. Very good performer? You bet. Without terrible weaknesses? Nope. That said, I own several R8500s and think they are terribly underrated by the radio community. I certainly prefer them to the '75. -- Eric F. Richards, "Nature abhors a vacuum tube." -- J. R. Pierce, Bell Labs, c. 1940 |

I personally would choose a stock R75 over an 800 in a heartbeat, not
because I'm an R75 fan but because I'm not so impressed with the 800 (for reasons that can obviously be subjective and idiosyncratic). While I can't assign exact percentages to overall performance, I'm surprised by your comparison of the 800's performance with that of the R8B's. I think there's a big, immediately noticeable difference in their performance. I've sold a couple of 800s simply because I didn't like them. I'd never sell my Drake or even my Sony SW77. But maybe I just have unusual preferences. There are lots of folks whose opinions I respect who love the 800. Variety is the spice of life, I guess. Steve |
