Why?

I take the time to post dx logs, and they're ignored, except by Tebo who
corrects one of my assumptions. But people who post off topic get
zillions of responses, most of them childish insults from the likes of
Ace. David never lacks for attention. But my logs? ZZZZZZZZ (apparently)
Is this REALLY a shortwave radio group? Or just another place for people
to insult each other and act passive aggressive?

Probably for the same reason I keep answering the same antenna
questions over and over again. Sometimes to the same people.

Actively insulting someone is being aggressive not being passive
aggressive.

I read your logs. I noticed you spent time on the 31 meter band.

I don't want to pick apart the logs you post but it is useful to know

Tomorrow morning I may try tuning around 19m in hopes of hearing some
Arabic from Middle Eastern stations. I noticed that the Saudis have a
prayer service on 15205 between 1600-1800. I'll have to recheck Radio
Farda freqs for that time too.

For the number of signals transmitted on them I seem to pick up the
fewest stations on the 22 and 19 meter bands and for the power they
transmit the Mideast is usually weak signals. Here in southern
California they don't get much bang for the 500kW buck.

Actually, if a signal isn't beamed to my area I consider it to be DX.
Even if it is VOA. I hear a lot of Asian domestic SW from here in
California, and rely on the lists to tell me what I'm listening to
because I can't decipher Chinese much less Laotian (the Radio Free Asia
log I had). I AM disappointed that I can't seem to hear anything from
the Middle East here, considering how "hot" that region is in political
terms. I used to be able to hear morning prayers and Quran readings live
from Saudi Arabia on 15170 after 0300, but not now. I've NEVER heard
Iran in English, which I'd like to (my only log of them is in Farsi). If
you look at my log that I recently posted, you'll see VOA and RN and RA
and the big boys, but you'll also see CNR in Uighur (according to
Passport, where DO they speak Uighur anyway?) and RFA in Laotian (only
heard them in Chinese previously). And you'll see Indonesia and other
Asian countries that you just can't hear on the east coast. (Similarly,
I usually can't hear Africa.) I'd love to listen between 0700 and 1000
but I'm asleep then, it's the middle of the night in California. As for
South America, transmitters change hands often down there and the
station names change too, so don't be surprised if you can't ID
something in Spanish. Fortunately, you can learn some Spanish at your
local community college, which will help you ID these stations.

Michael,

Try listening on 6120 khz at 8:30EST. VOIRI comes on then and
broadcasts in English for about an hour. Their start time can be
irregular, though. Over the last couple of weeks, I've heard them start
ten and even fifteen minutes late. Sometimes the broadcast ends
abruptly as well. Still, they occasionally have a very strong signal on
the East Coast and there's a listenable signal for them on most nights.

Welcome to the 'Net! LOL

I post my logs on occasion too, but really, how many people actually
read them to correct them. I look at others logs to see if 1) they're
anywhere near me, and then 2) if theyhave something rare, whether I
can hear it.

The thing about the 'Net is that everyone can get rude, nasty and
ugly, things that they cannot do in real life for one reason or
another. That's the big attraction. Oh, and don't forget the
supposed "anonymity" factor. Some people delight in tormenting others
because they feel they can not be tracked down. This is true only in
few cases. Most folks aren't thorough enough.

You can be anyone you want on the 'Net, and can stir up a ****storm
the likes of which the world has never seen. Just witness the posts
here. Some folks think for days on a question to pose that will
generate such a maelstrom of replies. This is their life.

Me? I'll stick to posting and reading logs, Dogg! :-D

On an internet board local to me, there was somebody who came in and
took over the board, posting 30 times a day (out of 40 posts a day) and
insulting everyone, trying to get people banned from the group, etc.
Things have quieted down now, but she's still there, insulting people
and making stupid remarks. I've had a net connection for 10 years, so
I'm used to it, but it's still frustrating.

Use a kill file. A stinking Troll can post 1000 a day and it won't
matter to you. Ignoring Trolls works. We just had one come and go in
record time. He probable would have left even sooner if the one or two
people still responding to him would have stopped. These jerks live to
get a rise out of you and will leave if ignored. ignoring them deprives
them of their "fun."

This particular board (the local one) is Web based and doesn't have a
killfile. However, you can "flag" individual posts for removal by the
admins, and they can ban certain email addresses. On here, I can easily
ignore certain posters without a killfile since on usenet each article
has to have an "author name" and the vast majority of trolls aren't
smart enough to keep changing it. The smarter ones keep changing their
email addresses to avoid killfiles, but not their author names. So their
posts are easily recognizable and ignorable. I should take my own advice
and stop responding to political posts, I tend to be rather passionate
about politics but this isn't the place for it.

Me? I'll stick to posting and reading logs, Dogg! :-D

You do that.

I will. Usually I don't wake up early enough to do some DXing, but I
will be doing so in the future most likely, so I will be posting more
logs. Usually I just focus on one band a day and write down everything I
can hear on that band, which means my logs are a mix of big boys and
small stations.

I=3Fve been away for a while, but I have seen that log postings don=3Ft
generally cause a lot of discussion. Stewart MacKenzie has been posting
his loggings on here for years, for example, and doesn=3Ft get much in the
way of direct replies. What=3Fs to say, after all? You heard =3Fem, good
for you, and thanks for the info which will help me pick =3Fem up.

The problem with some of the other so-called discussions are that
someone comes in with a hot-button post, and a lot of folks feel it
their sworn duty to either tell him to get lost, or drop down to his
level and get embroiled in a nasty posting war.

Personally, I suggest you treat =3Fem like jammers: ignore them. Most
newsreaders have a =3Ftwit filter=3F or =3Fbozo bin=3F where you can add
individual twits/bozos to a list, and postings from those people will
subsequently be ignored. Works pretty well for me.

Nothing has changed at this end, so I wonder if perhaps my ISP has
farbled around with things. Prior to this I was using Individual.net as
my non-binaries news feed, but they went to fee-based instead of free so
I need to find another one. (I have RoadRunner as my ISP and I can only
access it from a RoadRunner Internet connection, which sucks when I
travel, which is why I used Individual.net instead.)

What's with the =3Fv instead of ' in your messages? Is it an
artifact of MicroPlanet-Gravity/2.60.2060 or are you copying and pasting
from some other software?

Thanks for mentioning it. I just noticed that today, not sure why it
happened all of a sudden. Never happened before. I?ll look into it.

The only reason I asked was that I have to slow down when I read
messages that contain odd formating or errors and I'd never seen this
one before.

Easy as pie to travel with webtv. My Philips model MAT 976 webtv set top
box is about the same size as a VCR player/recorder is.If I travel
somewhere with it,all I would need to do is hook it up to a tv set and
turn it on.There will be two pop ups.One will say Same Place, the other
will say Moved.I would click on Moved and watch it dial up to the
internet in one minute or less, that's all there is to it.Everything
would be just the same as though I had never unhooked it in the first
place. In many ways, believe it or not, webtv is much better than useing a
computer.

I=3Fve instead of I've, or =3F instead of ' in his posts. I'm a
speed reader so things like this trip me up.

No problem, and thanks again for mentioning it. I think I've got the
problem licked.

Try using it on a plane, or in the airport terminal. WebTV isn't quite
a viable solution for me, although I'm glad it works for you.

Looks like you did. Now if we could get you to stop responding to well
known Trolls you would be in good shape.

Thanks. I do try, but I guess my BS Detector isn't as highly refined as
some.
