Killfiles
I have never really understood the concept of killfiles. I mean, when
it comes to radio....we seem to want to WALK ON TOP of the other fella when he/she makes you mad. We jam the living crap out of the person or subject we don't care to hear. A Killfile just sounds like the opposite. Instead of jamming, we're just turning our "receiver" off. So I'm suppose to be upset when you turn your receiver off and type: PLONK????? I could care less! Everybody else is participating but the killfilers! Another thing: Do you REALLY believe these people killfile all of this fine subject matter in here??? Of course not!! They're here because they WANT to be a part of the madness that is rrs! If they were looking for order and civility....they would go to yahoo-groups....or something even more wishy-washy..... This place used to be an extremely vaulable shortwave resource, especially for beginners. Many of those whose who provided that expertise have left because of the trash talking. Nope. I just remember when I left a couple of years ago, announcing a
killfile was the big thing. Then, today, I noticed a new rrs subject mentioning a killfile once again. So this practiced hasn't changed in over two years and it made me curious once again. Maybe I need to elaborate: What is the deal with MENTIONING the PLONK in the first place???? To me, it's nothing more than someone announcing on 14.313 that they're now turning his/her radio off...hah hah...nah nah...take that. And the rest of 14.313 is suppose to be all po'ed at the guy who turned his radio off on them. Makes no sense! So what? Just looking for some elaboration..... I realize that you would prefer the balance of on-topic:off-topic posts to be heavily weighted to on-topic. There's nothing wrong with that. However, if you peruse usenet much, then you should already know the nature of public forums. As the concept has matured over time, private forums have become about the only place you can realistically expect to find the balance you seek. You probably already know that as well. So I would say that your expectations for a public, un-moderated usenet forum (though admirably optimistic) are fairly unrealistic. Do we want this group to be nothing more than 150+ posts per day consisting only of "Here's My Logs!" type posts? Part and parcel of the hobby is the variety of content you can hear. If some in this group had their way, I would only be able to post a freq, time and sinpo, but would be banished to the hinterlands for discussing anything to do with the actual content of what I heard. If it ever turns into that, then I'd rather go dig stumps. -=jd= Like it or not, many talented members of this hobby have left this NG for good and for one reason: The namecalling, political BS that now passes for conversation on this NG. If that's your favorite sport, there must be hundreds of newsgroups where people rant all day long about everything. Why hijack this group for that purpose? Look I'm not important, and I can go elsewhere.......but there used to be lots of international goodwill and dialogue here and tremedous help for newbies. Now it's anti-canada, anti-this, anti-everything. The conversation now is about as immature as I have ever seen here. KIllfiling cross-posters and those who never post shortwave is a great way to at least make the conversations seem more civil. I own a little Radio Shack 150 channel hand held scanner radio I bought
for $75.00 at the Eazy Pawn shop in Pearl across the Pearl River from Jackson.The radio works just like brand new.Sometimes I turn it on and listen for a while and I can hear a few Hams talking to each other.There is a Krystal restaurant about a block from me on Highway 80 just outside of Metro Center mall www.metromalljackson.com and I used to listen to the folks at the drive up window.It got to where I can't pick them up on my radio anymore and I wonder why? Did they start useing some sort of spread sprectum two way radios in there or what? [May I take your order,sir?] {two Krystals,two fries,and two cokes} [Thank you sir,please pull around to the window,your order is ready} I enjoyed listening to those folks over there.A few years ago,I used to listen to a few folks phone calls on my road and the next road across from me untill they got them digital spread sprectum (or whatever it's called) phones and them cell phones.I used to hear some real good juicy conversation on their phones with my little scanner radio. cuhulin |

If you don't understand killfiles then you've never been on the receiving
end of consistent insults and trolls. There are people who post in this NG who basically ONLY insult others personally or insult their country. They post aggressively whatever the topic may be. They alienate and annoy many of us. These people don't respond to polite suggestions about their manner of posting, and they often continue to post and post again in the same topic threads until they finally generate a response. A killfile in this sort of situation is like telling someone to stop bothering you. Like finding an "off switch". Justified and necessary, unfortunately. There is more than enough data to suggest psychological pathology and plain mean spiritedness for a number of these persons. To slightly correct you, a killfile is like filtering out static.
