R Australia on death penalty
Heard today at ~ 1200 UTC on 6020 "Late Night Live". Interview w/ the Nun
Prejean whose story was adapted in the movie "Dead Man Walking". She said 8/10 executions are black people convicted of killing whites by white juries, talked of sloppy defence representation, the harrowing experience of people being taken to the execution area several times only to have last minute stays, how politicians brag about how many people were executed under their watch, how "closure" does not occur for victims' families - although assumed to - by watching the convicted die. She also spoke of the wrongly convicted. Bush apparently spent 15 minutes each on a series of files sent to be done to death. He doesn't sound like he's from the same religion as me if he's so cavalier about death. The theme stated at the end was how a violent society feels it should solve everything by more violence. Bombs internationally, executions locally. And the peculiar religious fundamentalist idea of protecting unborn children combined with execute others. One weird thing was that they actually alcohol swab the arm of the condemned before inserting the lethal injection IV. Why? |
