Default HF-225 repair

My Lowe HF-225 bacame dead on all bands but MW, keypad and frequency
display are working fine, cutoff point seems to be around 3000khz, not
certain anymore, but there is a definite cutoff point in there where it
just gets quiet, which leads me to suspect input filters, coils, or
other front-end circuits. This may have been result of lightning damage.
All other functions working OK. I have the service manual with
schematics and have done some work to this radio in the past. Can you
give me any leads? I really miss ths radio. Email welcome (no spam)

Thanks,

Bob from Michigan

Bob,

I had a similar problem with an HF-225 several years ago. Turned out to
be a bad diode in the bandpass filter. Like you, MW was fine, but
anything above a certain frequency (can't recall) was shot. Hope this
helps in tracking down the problem. I'm not sure, but the Lowe website
also lists common problems and the causes on thier website on the used
equipment page...

He e-mailed me directly, and I gave him some leads. Hopefully, he will have
it running soon.

"The most common failures of the HF150 and HF225 occur after local
electrical storms. With the HF150 the first mixer (Q22 SL6440C) fails
causing the set to have low sensitivity and overload easily. With the HF225
you get no operation over half the frequency range. Diode D1(BA244 or any
low capacitance switching diode) has probably failed, this is in one corner
inside the tin box enclosure."

The above quote is straight from this website:

Always glad to help....................I've been behind the 8-ball too many
times in the past, so I know how it feels.
