The irony was clearly lost.....

I was going to show how to calculate a 1/4 wavelenght dipole,
decided it would be a waste.

Just go for as long a wire as you can put in the air.
Higher is better. Longer is better.
Stay way from power poles and do NOT run your antenna
under a power line.

Anything over 200' starts to get directional in the direction
the wire is running.

Wire can zig zag all over the place and still be effetive.

A 50~75' wire works pretty darn well.
A 1000' wire works well also.
And a 666' wire would also be good.
:-)
And for radios (300/F)/4 is the MAGIC number.
A good number to be able to generate.
Even moreso if you ever wish to transmit.

It is said in the Scrolls of Skellus that a wire antenna 666 feet long
will receive transmissions from hell.

You gotta schematic for that? g

Try to set up as long a wire antenna as possible;
way over 100 feet

most Dxpeditions use 800 foot + wire antennas.. Set it up so the broad
end ( length) points toward what your trying to pick up signals from;

If you r in the south, and want to pick up stuff from the north,
set the antenna up in an east- west line.

Keep it away from electrical equipment, electrical lines. Disconnect it
when not in use ( Lightning)

after you have it set up, turn on your radio to a
frequency with no signal nearby but one far away you want to try
picking up

Now move the antenna wire closer to the radio..

Poke at it..

Should be fun

No... if you want to pick up stuff from the north one would wish to have the
length of the antenna running south to north. This would be true of a long
Beverage type of antenna.
