Significant Weakening Of Gulf Stream Detected Posted by: Indy On: Sun May, 8 2005 @ 08:01 GMT Scientists have found evidence that the sinking mechanism that drives the Gulf Stream has weakened to less than 25% of its original strength. The results could mean a significant cooling for Britain and Europe. original news source: www.timesonline.co.uk CLIMATE change researchers have detected the first signs of a slowdown in the Gulf Stream — the mighty ocean current that keeps Britain and Europe from freezing. I wonder if this means a revival of the Scottish ski industry, currently in decline due to dwindling snowfalls? ;-) Even here in Michigan (USA) we haven't had any really good snow since the 60's save for some nasty stuff in '77 and '78 or so. The ski industry has been suffering here as well. I though, am looking forward to planting a few palm trees and perhaps an orange grove to help tide me through my years as a pensioner. dxAce Michigan USA You may be interested to know that there are a small number of palm trees in peoples' gardens on the north/west coast of Scotland (c.58 degrees north). Though it's not exactly tropical there; in some places the temperature rarely goes below freezing, because of the "gulf stream". This is good enough for some types of palm, apparently. And the same area of Scotland is also an excellent place for DX-peditions seeking the ultimate trans-Atlantic MF catches; localities remote from power lines and other sources of noise. eg.
