"The weakening, apparently caused by global warming, could herald big
changes in the current over the next few years or decades."

It remains to be seen whether the observable melting of the ice sheets
and apparent global warming is part of a periodic natural cycle or
whether manmade pollution plays a part as well. The shrinkage of ice
packs near the poles is astounding.
