with decent AM sound quality."

Spend a few weekends cruising the garage and estate sales for a used
model in your area. There are usually plenty of them, including a few
high quality Panasonic RF-2600, 2800 and 2900 portables.

The only caveat would be to plug it in and try all controls including
the sometimes troublesome bandswitch.
