Hey there,

I'm a newbie who has been having fun with my lil Grundig mini 100 PE,
and I looking at SW radios the next step up. Got my eyes on the Kaito
KA1102, or the Eton E10/Tecsun PL-550 (mostly because I've been able to
examine the Eton hands-on. Looking for something with better reception
than my lil mini, good sound. The KA1102 seems to get a hunka good
reviews, and has neat features, but no knob. A silly requirement, but
I'm still getting used to the idea of digital tuning. (also why I've
been considering the grundig s350, good sound, and the knob).

Advise, please. Thanks.

OK, let me rephrase. I'm trying to decide between a KA1102 and a
E10/PL-500. Any thoughts?

The Kaito has the adantage of SSB reception, albeit in a rudimentary
fashion. The Eton has [supposedly] implemented IF shift which can
come in quite handy with adjacent frequency crud but does not have
SSB; I don't suspect their 'antenna trimmer' is anything more than a
small variable capacitor and is probably more flash than function.
These days both radios are built in China [and if I'm wrong this
thread will suddenly have 27 people chiming in to correct me but offer
you no advice ] so quality is probably a toss-up between the two.

May I suggest you contact Universal Radio by phone, they sell both and
perhaps will allow an exchange to the other if you are not satisfied
with your selection?

Good Luck

I have a KA1102. Great little portable for the price. I have gotten
excellent results pulling in stations off the whip even in a reception-poor
area. The reviewers gave the E10 a pretty good review in the PWBR 2005
edition, but the radio is about twice the price of the KA/DE1102-- there is
an eBay seller that sells the DE1102 (same radio as the KA1102) for less
than $50 US.

I believe the Tecsun PL-350 also has a tuning knob, and it has gotten
good reviews on this newsgroup. It doesn't have an Eton equivalent,
however, so you'll have to buy it off ebay. The version sold on ebay is
labeled in Chinese, which can be a little disconcerting, but it comes
with an English manual and you could always use a labeler to stick
English labels on your most used buttons. The SSB function on the
Degen/Kaito radios seems to me to be more flash than substance. I have
an 1102 and agree that it's excellent, but for somebody used to a tuning
knob the slew buttons can make operation tedious. I hardly ever use them
however since I just use it for casual listening not DXing. I just enter
the freq directly.

Hi there

Why not the {Degen} Kaito 1103 then? About the same price and it's a
sensitive little radio.

Mostly because of what I read about its ergonomics re the volume/tuning
knob and the faux analog screen. And some other details I forget, but
don't have the reviews here in front of me.

Yeah, the ergonomics and weird face layout turn some people off. I know
that I'm happier with the 1102.
