PLEASE Support Uncensored Broadcasts to China
We started the NTDTV satellite channel http://www.ntdtv.com because we
believe that anyone, anywhere has the right to communicate with anyone, anywhere. We believe that especially people of Chinese origin need a forum for dialogue as never before, just as the citizens of China need free flow of information with the rest of the world. We have worked hard to use digital and satellite technologies to enlarge the communication space among Chinese people everywhere. What Happened? http://www.ntdtv.com/xtr/eng/eutelsat/what_happened.htm [Please click links on the left side column for complete details] One year ago, NTDTV made a business partnership with Eutelsat to transmit NTDTV’s signal to Asia and China. Since then, NTDTV is the only non-governmental TV that broadcasts to China uncensored and in Mandarin. Working closely with Eutelsat, we opened a historic “open satellite window” in the great wall of information control that is forcibly maintained by Beijing. Through that open window we have broadcast a wide variety of programs, including the European Union debate about China policy as well as many messages sent expressly to our Chinese viewers on the Eutelsat W5 Asia Beam by dozens of elected European leaders. We broadcast, “live” and in simultaneous translation, the US Presidential debates which had an immense response from our viewers in China. We broadcast programs on human rights in China, Article 23 in Hong Kong, economic development and corruption, traditional Chinese culture, and so much more. Now we are just days away from Eutelsat stopping NTDTV’s transmission to Asia and China. Eutelsat is preparing to slam shut the “open satellite window” this week. Instead of expanding the historic opening of the world's largest society to the free flow of broadcast information, Eutelsat is choosing to help Beijing reassert full content control over satellite broadcasting. In fact, Eutelsat’s Chairman, Mr. Giuliano Berretta has recently signed what Eutelsat called a “historic partnership agreement” with the same agency of the Chinese Government that instructed Eutelsat to remove NTDTV from the W5 Asia Beam. And Mr. Berretta is primed for still more favors from Beijing, in return for putting Eutelsat’s Inter-Governmental Convention as well as various European and international conventions in the company shredder. One year ago, when NTDTV started making a business partnership with the European satellite industry, we took seriously Europe’s largest satellite company, Eutelsat, when its leadership assured us that they would not cancel NTDTV’s transmission to Asia -- no matter how strong the political pressure from the Chinese or other authorities, and no matter how large the economic incentives. We were honestly impressed last April when Eutelsat’s Chairman, Mr. Berretta, gave the NTDTV Board his personal guarantee that hewould never remove our channel from his company’s satellites. The European values of pluralism and fairness are embedded in the legal Convention that governs Eutelsat, he said. Respect for pluralism is a vital factor that distinguishes Eutelsat from the rest of the satellite industry, he said. It would need an order of the highest court in France to make him remove our channel, he said. Eutelsat has been under tremendous political and economic pressure from the Chinese Communist government since it began NTDTV's Asia broadcast last year. Under this pressure, Eutelsat decided not to renew NTDTV's Asia broadcast transmission contract this year. Your help carried us through the first termination deadline and brought Eutelsat to the negotiating table. Your help carried us again though the first month of negotiations and another shutdown threat. Your continuing help is still absolutely essential to carry us through the rest of the negotiation until an agreement that can protect NTDTV's long-term and uncensored Asia broadcast is reached. You can support NTDTV in many ways, including: -- Sign the on-line petition (or hard-copy version circulating in your community) to President Bush http://www.ntdtv.com/xtr/eng/eutelsat/petition.htm -- Contact your elected representatives to ask their support http://www.ntdtv.com/xtr/eng/eutelsa...sat_public.htm -- Contact Eutelsat investors and board to support continuation of NTDTV's Asia broadcast: http://www.ntdtv.com/xtr/eng/eutelsa...lsat_board.htm -- PLEASE CONTRIBUTE to the NTDTV satellite fund so that we can purchase our own platform: Online Credit Card http://www.ntdtv.com/xtr/donation/ccpayment.htm OR by Check: http://www.ntdtv.com/xtr/eng/eutelsa...d_overview.htm Please make checks payable to "New Tang Dynasty TV."
