The Drake was much better built and actually quite portable.

Indeed. On a side-by side comparison I could make the SW8 sound just
as good as
the Grundig using an outboard speaker. Even with the extra speaker,
the Drake/speaker combo
was less than half the size of the Grundig, whose construction quality
leaves
a lot to be desired (remember that tuning knob?)
