Has anyone ever heard of non-selectable sideband?

Well, sort of. As I understand it, selectable sideband means that you
can select USB or LSB. By that definition, the sideband on some cheapie
Chinese radios, such as the Degen 1102, would be nonselectable sideband.
The 1102 has a single "SSB" button with a thumbwheel to adjust the BFO.

Actually, an Eton employee has been using one of the new E1's for
several weeks now and says it surpasses the Satellit 800. Remember,
the new E1 has THREE bandwidths, a FAST/SLOW AGC, selectable sideband
sync detection, as well as PASSBAND tuning. So the set is actually
somewhere between the Drake SW8 and the Drake R8B. The only main
features missing on this portable are a Noise Blanker and extra
bandwidth filters for CW reception. It is also missing a ferrit
antenna for MW reception but instead uses the whip antenna, as does the
Drake SW8. I would have preferred a large ferrit antenna for complete
portability rather than have to hook up a loop or other external
antenna for MW DXing. This should be (and I am told IS) a killer
portable.

The reason given to me as to why the delays -- they are working out all
quality control issues BEFORE they release any production units for
retail as they don't want a repeat of what happened when the Satellit
800 came out.

Over in the Yahoo Eton E1 group, there is a guy who claims to have one
already. Word has it, Sharper Image is the ONLY retailer to have about 30
or so ready for immediate shipment...

That radio I predict will be mediocre at best.

I think not this long. The radio probably has had functional design
problems. Maybe feature creep had a play in the delays.

Well I hope it works out for them but if it was me, I would have kept my
mouth shut until it was done and then I would have marketed it. We'll see.

I went to a local "Sharper Image" store in Avon CT and they haven't heard a
thing about it.

I was hoping to sneak in and check it out, but they all looked perplexed or
should I say looked perplexed at me like I was nuts the way i went on about
it lol.

Does this thing only have *one* antenna jack for all three bands?

Well... under the 'Features' portion of the URL above you might have read the
following:

"External Antenna Connection for the addition of auxiliary antennas, e.g.
professionally engineered shortwave antennas; long-wire shortwave
antennas; specialized AM broadcast band antennas for enthusiasts of AM
DX’ing; FM broadcast band antennas and XM antenna. "

I may be wrong, but one would figure that there would be more than one
connection.
