place to buy ATS909
Which is the best place to buy an ATS909? Are the "mods" worth it? Who does
them best? Nic. |
www.ccrane.com sells them and www.jr.com sells some Sangean
radios too. www.rense.com has (or used to have) a link about modifications for Sangean radios,or maybe it was at www.coasttocoastam.com where I once saw that link.A www.devilfinder.com search for,Sangean Radios might turn up some more links.I have read a few times before though that the LCD display panels on those Sangean radios don't hold up well.I bought two Sangean radios about seven years ago.I sent them back to Bob Crane because in my opinion, they are over priced and not any good. cuhulin |

So why did I send them back? Glad you asked. The first one I bought from
www.ccrane.com (by the way, their website is down right now for maintance) was the one with AM/FM/Weather and a couple of tv bands. That radio didn't impress me at all,Period! At the same time,I bought one of those antenna booster thingys with the round knob in the middle of it,it made absolutely no difference at all with helping to pick up long distance AM stations,I sent it back too.(and the sound quality isn't all that good either) The second one I bought from them was an ATS 909 and I even paid about $35.00 extra for the fine tuning thingy (or whatever they call it,I don't remember if it was on that radio or the other radio) That radio didn't impress me either,Period!.If I ever buy another Sangean radio,it will be at the Goodwill thrift store or a similar store. cuhulin |

The better the built-in antenna, the less improvement you'll notice with one of those external tuned passive booster things. |

I don't own one,but from what I have read of people's comments before in
this news group about the Sony 7600 GR radios,I think they are a good buy for $149.88 at www.jr.com Most of my old radios I own do a good enough job at picking up radio stations for me.Last year I bought a Linksys Wireless B Music System internet radio.I use it wirelessly around my house and I can use it up to about a 100 feet away out in my yard if I want to.I bought it for about $149.00 at a wal mart store. www.devilfinder.com Linksys Wireless B Music System cuhulin |
radiolabs.com That is the website I was talking about that used to be at
the top of the page at www.rense.com cuhulin |

Linksys Wireless B Music System internet radio That's not a radio. You need a computer to use it. |
I knew that before I bought my Linksys internet radio when I read the
information on the box.I don't tote it much though,I can listen to it good enough when I am in other rooms in my house, besides,I don't want to drop it.It has two speakers and I can tune in radio stations around the World. It is an internet radio.I like physical radios even though I can use my computer as an internet radio.I am listening to Radio One out of Dublin,Ireland on it right now. That is why I bought it,so I can listen to Ireland and Scotland radio stations. It is worth it to me.Whatever turns your crank,Hank. cuhulin |

It is at www.stevequayle.com where that www.radiolabs.com link
is.I don't know why I had been thinking it was at rense.com or coasttcoastam.com cuhulin |

I played with one extensively at EEB and came away with the feeling that it was cheaply made, especially in comparison to the more expensive (and better performing) Sony 2010 which I ended up buying. Ya get whatcha pay for. |
That tote it whatever it is satellite radio you have uses satellites and
computers.I don't doubt somewhere in the mix, satellites are involved with my intenet radio too.In fact,I am pretty sure they are. cuhulin |

But if you mean surviving a drop I cpuldn't tell you about that...I don't drop my radios as a test. I do know the controls on the 2010 were far more precise and solid feeling and the case didn't tend to twist and give a bit like the ATS 803a. And my 2010 was going strong for the 12 years leading up to its sale. |

The ATS-803A is built like a tank. http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/2814 ''Conclusion The Sangean ATS-803A provides a lot of value. It is no wonder they were so popular. It is a well rounded versatile portable radio. 803A's (or their Radio Shack cousins, DX-440's) are frequently sold used in the $60-$100 range. The days of manufacturing portables at this kind of quality level have passed us by. The 803A is a good all-around player for any MW/SW listener, especially if you can string up even a moderate length external antenna. If you can find one in good condition in the $60-$80 range, you are staring a bargain in the face. Note on Modifications This radio has proven to be a modifier's delight. Components inside are relatively easy to get to and there is ample room inside to move things around, add stuff, etc. Among the mods chronicled on the internet: "Anti-chuff," fine tuning and improved whip sensitivity. The fine tune mod is especially valuable for MW work. The fine tune mod provides +/- 3 kHz from the BFO control, when operating in the BFO Off position.'' http://www.radiointel.com/review-ats803a.htm |

Yes, and I can drag out the innumerable glowing reviews of the 2010 over it's very long run as a popular high quality portable. The 803 was a decent radio and a good deal for the money, but that's about it. The cheap feel left something to be desired and better performance could definitely be gotten with the 2010. That's no reason to be mean. A lot of people really loved their 803As. |

The ATS-606A is a great walkaround shortwave. I take mine on morning hikes. Picks up India just fine at 8 in the morning with just the built-in whip. The 1 kHz fine tuning is very helpful. |
Humph....sounds like Sirius is lagging behind the internet by quite a
ways....though that won't stop them from mailing you a bill every month. Steve |

Do yourself a favor and don't get one...unless you want to tied to an external antenna. Mine is deaf as a post on its whip. Weird. Both my 909 and 398 work pretty good on the whip. A long wire picks up performance, as is to be expected. I bought these instead of the 7600 because of the actual tuning knobs. That and the sync detect on the Sony completely failed to impress me. mike |
Over five years ago,I could pick up Radio One in Dublin,Ireland (and
some other radio stations over there too,one of them was Galway) and also a taped replay of a news, weather, and sports tv station via windows media with my webtv. They upgraded though (not webtv) and I can't pick them up anymore with my webtv.Yep,I used to watch a taped replay every day on my tv set of that tv station in Dublin. It was sort of like a stop action mode, the video was. There tv news on tv over there is about the same as it is over here, except the accent is different. cuhulin |
