Is that really true? Ie. is it:

A) A "right", enforced by laws/constitution
B) A "freedom", something which is not specifically illegal, or
C) Not yet true, a political suggestion that you are recommending?

How does/would it apply to encrypted electronic transmissions - ie. if
it is a right, does that mean that US citizens also have the right to
the decryption keys, or the right to hack encrypted data? Surely this
contravienes the Digital Millenium laws?

In the UK, the situation is confused. IIRC, in *theory* it is illegal
to listen to any station that does not have a broadcasting licence
from the government. Therefore this makes most of SW DXing
theoretically illegal. However, IIRC, there has only ever been one
prosecution of this - a DJ who was caught displaying a pirate radio
sticker in his car window.

Okay, I believe you, but I'm curious - is this enshrined in your
constitution (bill of rights), or is this just something which is not
otherwise illegal (a "freedom")?

For instance, I have the FREEDOM to eat cornflakes, but I don't have
the RIGHT to eat cornflakes. If my village shop runs out of cornflakes
then I cannot take legal action against the shop.

However, I have the RIGHT to a copy of any police interview with me.
If the police run out of cassette tapes or paper then I CAN take legal
action against the police.

Actually, you don't, cuhulin.

Newer radio scanners for the public are required by law not to be capable of
eavesdropping on cellular phone frequencies. Many states have outlawed
radar detectors (which, of course, do nothing but listen for an electronic
transmission).

So, the reality is: "Every American citizen SHOULD have the right to listen
to any and all electronic transmissions, period."
