using my 7600GR with windup antenna that came with it. It helps but
still on my SW bands (above 3.5 mhz to 30mhz) can only receive several
religion stations, couple chinese, french, indian, russian,spanish etc
stations and something that sounds like news from england. Otherwise I
get very bad signal (I do see -tune- showing up on my radio though but
all i hear is static or some faint voices). I was under impression that i
will be able to
listen in to ham radios, airplanes etc. Do i need more equipment like
Sony AN-LP1 antenna for better reception or is there something else i
need to do. I live in a large city maybe good 50 feet above the ground
so i don't imagine that there is alot of interference.

You should be able to hear everything you want to hear with the 7600GR.
You say you're in a city, and it sounds like you live in a large
apartment building. If so, your problems with reception probably stem
from the many sources of interference in your apartment, as well as
your neighbors'. Steel used in the construction of your building might
also be a problem. I suggest that you find a way to get an antenna,
even if it's just a length of wire, outside your apartment. If you have
a balcony of some kind, that would be a big help, but even dangling a
wire outside a window will be progress.

Oh, it's also worth noting that, if you want to listen to hams and
expecially aeronautical communications, you'd better know where to
look. Especially when it comes to the latter, it would be hard to just
stumble across the right frequencies unless the fine tuning wheel of
the 7600GR is in *exactly* the right position. Search the web for a
list of aeronautical frequencies and a description of where the amateur
bands are. Then tune to these frequencies, tuning slowly.

Get about 18 to 22 inches of thin wire and wrap (or attach an alligator
clip to one end of the wire) a bare end of the wire a couple of turns
around your radio's antenna.Mount the other end of the wire on a wall
useing a piece of tape or a thumbtack.

i think my radio already comes with antenna like that.

It's called "compact antenna" on this page.

It improves reception markedly but still many stations are suffering
from the problems i described earlier.

If I remember correctly, you fell OUT of a second storey window when you tried
just that method. Landing on your head was the only thing that saved your sorry
backside.
