Terry when I saw the pictures and read the "destructiosn" to make a BNC to RG 174 was when I DECIDED to BUY the flamin thing...I dont need grief AND AGGRAVATION FROM CABLES. SKYCRAFT here in orlando saved my butt as they had them in six foot lengths for a buck a foot...it wasnt RG 174...some thicker black RG-6-like "war" it works fine conveying signal from my new North County Active antenna to my ATS 909 Thanks for the URL saved to file Yodar ------------------ RG-174 is the smallest, most flexible 50 Ohm coax I have found. somehwre I have the RG number for mini 75 Ohm coax. While our radio don't really care, video is much less forgiving and mini coax is really nice for snaking a short discrete video run. I gave up on soldering RG174 connectors and use "crimp on" connectors. The connectors are reasonable in cost, but a good crimp tool is priced like it is made from gold! Glad you found some coax that would work.. My "go kit" has a ATS-909 with 25' of RG-174 coupled to a 9:1 in a sturdy UV resistant plastic box with stainless steel nuts/bolts to allow the rapid deployment of an antenna. I replaced the stock narrow ceramic IF fitler with one from a CB and it really helps in crudy conditions. You mentioned the need to build an external power pack, I have built a 5 "C" cell holder for NiMH that power the ATS909/DX398 for several long nights of listening. I also have a LM317 +~12V to 6V converter to allow opertion from a car battery. Just take care to keep the shell isolated from ground, it is +! I get more run time by grounding the - to the RF outer shell, bypassing the series protection diode. Take great care! Terry |
