The Moslems argued that since the Jews and Roman Catholics had
religious-based family courts for over a hundred years it was
discriminatory to not allow the same for Moslems. The Ontario
government's
answer to this was to disallow the practice for Roman Catholics and
Jews alike. Since nobody could have family courts, nobody was
being discriminated against. All family settlements now have to be
in accord with Canadian Law administered by secular courts. This will
present some problems for Moslems. For example, a divorce granted in
Canada would not be accepted in countries under Shariah law. I do not
believe that this proscription will apply to Aboriginals, who have
considerable autonomy. It should be noted that Aboriginals (Indians)
were never a conquered people but came into Canada as allies, but
that's another story.
