So which is it? I vote for the latter.

But since Yaesu, who seems to be the originator of "CAT", uses
it in their FRG-100 receiver, Computer Aided Tuning would indeed be
more descriptive.

And given that the original poster did not seem to be clueless and
posting an off-topic question here, clearly the "CAT" relates to
radio, and so many of the replies are irrelevant.

However -- in the Yaesu FT - 857 Manual, CAT is defined as Computer Aided
Transceiver
This allows the Transceiver settings to be controlled by a computer, can be
used with some logging programs.
Requires software and an appropriate cable

For Details - See Page 115 of the Yaseu FT-857 manual at URL:

Hmm what a mess - lets start over

CAT is Yaesu's Acronym for Computer Aided Transceiver.

This allows the Transceiver settings to be controlled by a computer, can be
used with some logging programs. Requires software and an appropriate cable.

For details go to the Yaesu page for the FT-857 at URL:

http://www.yaesu.com/indexVS.cfm?cmd...chived= 0--CL

Now click on FILES

Then click on FT-857 pdf (3.09 MB)

On page 115, read all about CAT for this transceiver
