"Crusading" literally meant to take up the cross to fight the Muslim infidels, except when it was used as an excuse to pillage and loot Christian Byzantium. Musselmen would not become Crusaders. Moorish Spain, like the rest of the Islamic world, was a haven of tolerance for the other peoples of the Book, unlike the areas that enjoyed the benefits of the reconquista where the Jews and Moors were either expelled or forced to convert to Christianity. |
