The Satellite 800 or the Icom IC-75.

Tnx

As an aside, those are the two tabletops I find in this price range.
Did I miss any?

A lot naturally depends on what you want to listen to. I'd recommend
the Icom if you're interested in listening to utilities or hams in SSB
mode. If you're primarily interested in listening to the BBC and in
occasional AM mode dxing, I'd look at the Palstar R30C or R30CC, even
though it is more expensive:

Of course it sounds like a telephone you nitwit.
Your using a 3KHz filter to listen to a 10KHz signal.

The key here is selectivity between a R75 and 800 in AM mode not what filter
your using - d'oh!

I'm using my R-75 for MW bedside listening and it's MW performance in
the SSB mode is rock solid, but it sounds like a telephone.

Does the R75 have an optional narrow AM filter available? If it does and
your interested in DXing MW get the R75. If you only want to listen to
medium to strong AM programs with very good audio fidelity then save your
money and get a Boston Acoustics Recepter radio.

If your a program listener who is interested mostly in

Strong signals and wants full FM in the Box, get the Sat 800..

IF you mostly enjoy Pirates, Utilities, Linconsihre Poacher, Volmets
off the Canary Islands,
of VERY faint faint SW stations, get the R-75..

Antenna counts for a lot.

Leroy! Dig. I have an HF-150; an R8B; an SW2; and the R-75. I used
to have 2 R-390As. I know what ''bandpass'' means.

I like it to sound like a telephone. Besides, narrower bandwidth,
better reception.

Is has 3 AM bandwidths. The Narrow is useless unless you off tune.
Talk Radio works real well in SSB tuning on the R-75.. Restricted
audio dynamic range. Clarity. Punch.

I want to listen to it all. Sometimes I like the stronger broadcast
CBC / BBC / Havana Cuba type stuff and sometimes I want the fainter,
off beat type of stuff, sometimes I like SSB.

I want it all..ALL.......ALL I SAY.

Seriously.

Sounding like a telephone is ok with me. I can always use headphones
or an external speaker. I'm more interested in a really good, all
around reciever. If I want FM quality I'll use my stereo.

A perfectly valid, modest and unassuming viewpoint. There should be no

Sanjaya,

Icom IC-R75 (R-75) Performance Upgrades by Kiwa Electronics :
KIWA = http://www.kiwa.com/R75.html

#1 Must Do = Kiwa Synchronous Detector Upgrade

# 2 Should do = Kiwa Audio Upgrade

# 3 Worth doing with #2 = Kiwa High-Fidelity Audio Filter

# 4 Do only 'if' you are into AM/MW DXing then get
the "Full" Mod Kiwa AM BCB RF Attenuator Disable

# 5 Worth doing 'if' you don't like play with the Twin PBT
and simply want to select a Filter = Kiwa R75 Filter Module

My Icom IC-R75 is a few years old and has the original Kiwa Mods :
* Kiwa Synchronous Detector Upgrade
* Kiwa Audio Upgrade
* 3.8 kHz IF Filter Upgrade for 450 kHz AM-Sync
(not available any more)

hope this helps ~ RHF

RHF wrote a pretty good assessment overall:

Icom IC-R75 (R-75) Performance Upgrades by Kiwa Electronics :

KIWA = http://www.kiwa.com/R75.html

YES! The AGC fix here is key.

# 2 Should do = Kiwa Audio Upgrade

YES! A big help, nicer audio.

# 3 Worth doing with #2 = Kiwa High-Fidelity Audio Filter

Yes, but note that this may *slightly* increase the potential to induce
audio heterodynes. I think that potential is small, but check with
Craig at Kiwa.

# 4 Do only 'if' you are into AM/MW DXing then get

the "Full" Mod Kiwa AM BCB RF Attenuator Disable

Maybe. This provides only a 3dB increase in the MW sensitivity, and if
you have AM blowtorches near your house, it may adversely affect SW. I
find that my own radio is plenty sensitive enough on MW, and the nearby
stations are patently obnoxious.

# 5 Worth doing 'if' you don't like play with the Twin PBT

and simply want to select a Filter = Kiwa R75 Filter Module

The old filter fix was a better one (see below)...

My Icom IC-R75 is a few years old and has the original Kiwa Mods :

* Kiwa Synchronous Detector Upgrade
* Kiwa Audio Upgrade
* 3.8 kHz IF Filter Upgrade for 450 kHz AM-Sync
(not available any more)

Same as mine, plus I have the 15 kHz filter reduced to 6 (which is
plenty wide enough for AM but affects FM modestly). That old filter
fix was the cat's pajamas, yielding an excellent array of filtration
plus ability to filter on AM and S-AM both, and very flexible use of
the PBT. The new one, apparently, does not give the full flexibility
on S-AM or with the PBT (no fault of Kiwa, BTW - he's doing his best).

Fie on Icom for creating a potentially excellent radio with a bunch of
goofy flaws!
