Xmas Present: Ten Tec RX 320D or Radio Labs Super Sangean ATS909??

Hi All

With these being about equal in price and having a laptop to drive the
Ten Tec what would be the choice here.

I am a novice but both look very good after a few days research, I do
love both.

I need you help to decide based I think more on pure technical merit
than anything. Which scores higher in your opinions?

thanks

If you want to use it as a portable, I'd go for the 909. If you want to
use it mostly in one location, I'd go for the ten tec.

Otherwise, I've seen some mixed reviews on the radio labs version of the
909, and I don't recall seeing anything but positive reviews of the 320.

I assume computer controlled Shortwave Radios require good computer
sound cards. So,if a computer sound card's audio chip bites the dust
after long use, that would require a new sound card or audio chip? For
computer sound cards and some other good computer related thingys,I
reccomend www.si87.com and www.monitorworld.com
I do not own a computer controlled Shortwave Radio,so I certainly am not
an expert.

Dear Mark

Should I be considering one or two more machines in this mix.

I really like the WiNRADiO WR-G303e standalone usb machine but it is
slightly out of my price range (and could bring the wife descending
upon me--presently flying under the radar,)

thanks

Paul

If I were you I might be tempted to get one of the remaining Satellit 800's
from Universal. It's just a little more than the 320.

Between the 320 and the 909 I would get the 320.

Between the super 909 and the regular 909 I would get the regular. The
regular can be had for $219 and free shipping from Amazon/J &R. You could
also get a 909 and a Sony 7600 from the same place for $349 (includes free
shipping) which is the same cost as the 320. This would give you two radios.
Give the one you don't want to your wife, get her interested (hooked) and
then she will be the one wanting the radios. Also give her a regular
Christmas present in case Plan "A" doesn't work. Net Result = you get two
radios! WARNING: I take no responsibility for the outcome!

Also look at the deal that is offered on the 320 at dxtra.com
http://dxtra.com/rx320.html

P.S. Obviously if portability is a big issue than the 909 is the choice.
Keep in mind that the 320 could be used on a laptop and have a little
portability.

Hope this helps. Please let us know what you decide.

:)

Paul:

Getting a " Regular " 909

http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=18960

AND a 7600 from J&R sounds like a plan..

http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=1627439

They are both Very good radios.. AM / FM / Shortwave..

- also, string up a good outdoor antenna. Helps with reception of faint
stations..

- Radiolabs doubtless does good work;

but two for the price of one..?

use one for DX / Broadcast listening, the other for picking up 11.175
USB transmissions..

- & an " extra" gift.. just in case

- Happy Holidays..

I've heard generally good things about the winradios, but have no
personal experience with them.

I think an external winradio (the USB one you mentioned)would make lots
more sense than an internal one though, as odds are the radio will still
be a fine performer long after whatever card standards we're using now
are impossible to find on new computers.

I advise researching the heck out of purchases and buying whatever you
really want even if it means waiting a couple weeks or months to fit it
in the budget. In the long run, you'll end up with nicer stuff, and
save money.
